Is Coding a career ?

Just wanted to collect some opinions. I am in this coding/software thingy for the last three years. Now I am planning for my MS as I have done Bachelors of Computer Engineering. Can you people answer the following as these questions are a bit confusing. 1. Should I do MS ? (Logical Reasoning .... ) 2. If yes then which field. (I am planning for MS Project Management) Please comment. Regards Ahmad

If you are already a qualified SW engineer, and I dont mean just a coder, but with a good understanding of the full SW engineering proces, then you dont need more qualifications, unless you want to explore some of the more advanced aspects of SW engineering. If you want to move into project management, then this ISNT SW engineering or coding. Its a career change. Many see it as a step up, becuase of the somewhat dim view many people hold regarding prograsmmers. However, a programmer can be either two things, a dumb coder, turning module specs into code, or a propper SW engineer, who designs the compete system, cresaes test plans, documentation, and also implements in code. Now that IS a serious job, and anyone who takes a dim view of such a role is an arse wothy of noo respect at all.

Well to elaborate a lil more ... I have worked in both R&D and Cooperate culture. Have participated alot in SW design and devlopment. Have been a part of the QA team aswell and have done Documentation(though I hate that thingy). Now as I am working in a MultiNational Cooperate enviroment ... I am observing some different faces of project mangement. Though the design/devlopment thing is almost same as before. I need comments as why people do MS ... as alot of people are doing it. Do they have better chances for a good future then us? Thanks for the reply fat_boy.

Personaly speaking, I prefer engineering. I really like designing SW, I like the mind bending complexity, and the beauty of a good solution. So I will always stay technical rather than managerial. Although this doesnt disclude me from being capable of talking to customers, which is a crucial role in getting the product accepted, and the cheque signed. It must also be stated that in terms of job security, any project will always need engineers to get the thing done. Without them there isnt any product.
