Gmail 'security reasons'.....

It seems Gmail just blocks all *.exe, *.bat, *.vbs etc files from being sent on their email system (even if the offending file is inside another zip file)... Brilliant!! must be cheaper and more effective than having to actually run a virus scan on attachments like Yahoo or Hotmail :rolleyes: and how long do they plan to keep it in the BETA phase?? :confused:
I think that is brilliant. It cuts out an insane amount of virus/malware while only mildly affecting a small number of people who should be using an alternative delivery method for their executables. (I'd suggest secure ftp but whatever suits your need)

US government sites block all of those AND .zip files. Despite the inconvenience it causes *you*, it's an effective, low-impact way to stop a lot of the mal-ware that comes through email.

Last time I tried, simply renaming the executable file sufficed nicely.

The desktop email client (Outlook 2003 onwards) blocks them too. Albeit this, it does allow it sent within another compressed container anyway. :)

I can live with that, it's when gmail looks inside my zips and blocks them for the same reason ( this includes source code files ), that I am frustrated.

Yeah, that's what I do. But from time to time, the person on the other end gets confused by that. It's just a hassle.

Password protect the zip/rar/whatever and encrypt filenames. If you don't encrypt the filenames GMail can still get a list of the files within the archive without actually extracting them.
Found on Bash.org [erno] hm. I've lost a machine.. literally _lost_. it responds to ping, it works completely, I just can't figure out where in my apartment it is.

ACtually, it IS brilliant. It stops people from blindly opening email attachments in a harmful way. It works even when the virus scanners don't detect a virus they don't know about yet! Believe it or not, virus/trojan scanners do NOT protect us from viruses/trojans. If they did, new ones wouldn't be written anymore. They protect us from being re-infected by a virus that's been found out. They offer very little protection, if at all, from new ones... Ahh, the wonders of "Default Allow" policies...

Probably. Especially considering virus scanners don't really work. Frankly, email isn't terribly efficient for such distribution anyway - use a web or ftp site.
