I am a neophyte at trading. I was trying to create an account when I refrained myself, as it was asking for my mobile number, street address etc(though it helps shipment of the product). I would like to seek CPians views on how safe is it trade in ebay. Thanks

I've had no problems, although I've only sold and bought around 20 items.

If you're struggling developing software, then I'd recommend gardening.

You may have problems if your billing address != your shipping address under PayPal. They can't verify you. You also can't change your shipping address in mid transaction. Roswell

I've bought and should loads of stuff on ebay, I've been ripped off once and the are quite a lot of scammers on it. Just be sensible and treat people fairly and you should be OK.

Doesn't eBay have some sort of purchaser protection? Or am I being too naive :~

Ebay is very safe, ( I am a 100% 265 trades). Follow certain rules though! NEVER pay by western union. NEVER pay Cash, unless you are there to pick up the goods. Always insist on a proof of address when posting goods. PayPal is a safety feature, as it verifies users ID/Address, but still be careful, especially for large amounts. Maintain good communication with the other person.(Seriously!, good communicators are generally less likely to rip you off.) I have never been ripped off, only twice was a transaction a problem, once the buyer returned the goods, I gave a full refund, and once I didn't get part of something I had bought, I contacted, seller apologised and sent the missing part. Generally, look at the No of Trades and rating. So long as over 100 trades then the following % holds true. 100% - Trust totally. 98.00 to 99.99% - Trust totally, be aware that there has been a problem. 97.00 to 98.99% - Check with other trader 95.00 to 96.99% - Be VERY careful Under 95% - Caveat Emptor (Buyer Beware!)

I have used ebay for years. Anyone who asks for my personal info, the question I ask myself is, how much can they lose if they are found to mistreat my info ? In the case of ebay, it's a lot. I was looking at guitars yesterday and found a bunch of ads someone posted where the attached photos were hardcore pron. I spent 30 minutes trying to find a way to report this to ebay. Ebay basically creates a hands off system, they don't really do anything to stop copyright enfringements, or other things ( like the images I found ), they just sit back and say 'kaching'. But, your info is safe with them, never had a problem.

Hey, my rating was below 90% for some time, because out of the many transactions I've made, a lot are repeats, and I got 3 'revenge' feedbacks early on from sellers who ripped me off and didn't like getting a negative.

If it all goes wrong you won't get a dime of ebay.

I did point out my "general" rule was based on over one 100 transactions. Sorry if you infered any personal antagonism. Again, I did also point out that you should contact the other trader. If we were trading and you explained that the bad ones were very early on etc, I would adjust perception! :-D

It's worth noting that it is not available for purchases less then $100/US. I was scammed on eBay once on a $15 purchase. Unfortunately it was not worth my time to pursue this. I suspect that is what the scammer was betting on. Still it is ironic that I no longer feel safe purchasing cheap things on eBay. A cell phone sure, some game for my daughters no.

Omigosh! I only just saw your post. I hate not receiving replies any more. Sadly, nobody seems to care about the broken-ness of this feature. :( I'll stop by tomorrow - um... I mean today, after the sun comes up. :) /ravi
