Here's mine. At the age of 13, I managed to touch a PC[Thinks it's a 386] for the first time in a computer lab. It had a floppy booted MS DOS. That beeps loudly at boot up. When I first saw a computer I couldn't even guess it's purpose. I was even amazed by the fact that , if we press a key, it gets displayed on the screen!:-O [btw, I still wonder at it.that's a different thing]. I was tempted to type my name there. And the sequence : ME: C:>VUNIC. DOS: BAD COMMAND OR FILE NAME. I don't remember which came first, the Sinclair Timex Sinclair 1000 at school or an Apple II (or III or something ) in a computer programming course (LOGO) that I took with my dad at about that time.

PC? As in IBM PC or descendant? I got my hands on an old IBM PC-AT back in... '92 or '93. Learned DOS, GW-BASIC, Turbo C++, DEBUG.COM assembler. Still have the monster keyboard (Model M... what a great design. Everything good in modern keyboards was present, plus a comfortable size and an insane level of durability that really aren't.) My first computer was an already very old TI-99/4A that i picked up a couple of years earlier. I wrote a handful of games in TI-BASIC, typing them in completely each time as there was no reliable hard storage. It was a fun little machine. I saw a picture of a punch card in an encyclopedia once.

My first experience with a computer was with General Electric's Apple Time Sharing System and (very!) minimal BASIC. I used a teletype terminal to interact with the system: I would type in the programs, then an execution command; I received any results on the same printout. I could save output (such as program listings) to paper tape dispensed from the teletype terminal. I can still remember how excited I was to see a WANG. A computer the size of a desk! using casette tape for storage!! how MODERN it seemed. Up until 1985, I don't believe I'd ever touched an IBM PC, though I had played a bit with the Commodore 64 my stepfather won in a raffle (and which was the first machine I used to go online with Compuserve). In the early 70's my (elder) bro took me to see the (UK) MET Office's mainframe at (I think) Bracknell... it took up most of the entire floor of a very large building... banks and banks of towers with big whirling disks, and a mass of cables that made Bob Marley's hair look positively neat and tidy... Of course, it was about as powerful as your average $10 calculator these days, but I was well impressed.... Fred

okay, my VERY first experience with "touching" a PC was an unknown model used by the school for grades in early 9th grade (1979). The typing/business teacher was writing a program to do the grades and our GPA came out 0 on the first report card. Since my mother didn't bother to look past the zero to the actual grades I was grounded for two days until she realized what happened with the report card. I was pissed so I went to talk to the business teacher. He explained rather rudely and loudly that it wasn't HIS fault the GPA was zero, the computer obviously had an error.... and a long tirade about how computers created more errors than they solved. And he waved his hand at the computer screen to say "See" rhetorically of course.... I looked at the screen, I saw he summed grades to variable B, and printed A. Even though I didn't know basic, I knew logic. If you add something to B and you display A, you aren't displaying the right variable. I pointed out his error and got thrown out of the classroom with a yelling tirade of idiot students who think they know more than experienced teachers. The GPA was fixed on the next report card. I was learning basic within a month later, and finally understood why the output value was zero, the business teacher refused to talk to me thereafter. -- modified at 12:45 Tuesday 18th September, 2007

I remember my Dad brought home a ZX81[^] and 16k RAMpak that he borrowed from his friend. In 81, I would have been about 9 or 10 years old. I remember typing in small programs from the book, and being amazed by it. I also couldn't figure out that if I actually typed the 5 letters of the word "PRINT", it would give a syntax error, but if I let the computer type the word for me (by using the alt + key combination for PRINT) then it would work just fine. My first introduction to cognitive friction of user interfaces! After that, we purchased the 48k Oric Atmos[^], which was much better - it had sound and colors and everything! I actually wrote a small game for it called "Bug-Man Boris", in which you had to guide Boris around the screen to catch a bug that was randomly wandering about. Once you caught it, you had to take it to a holding area, at which point the time allowed to catch the next bug would decrease by 10 seconds. I submitted the game to the "Oric User" magazine, but they rejected it - and then announced their last issue the following month!

My dad arrived home one day, popped the boot of his beige Toyota Corolla and proudly displayed a beige 286. We rushed it inside, hooked it up on my desk and booted into the glory that was the command line prompt. I must have been about 9 or so. One thing that has stuck with me was playing the snake game that came with DOS and then going into the code and changing the body of the snake to a bunch of crazy characters. So much fun :)

10 PLOT 0,0 20 DRAW 100, 100 ... RUNI used to have a CIP-03[^] when I was about ten, which is actually the (illegal - I guess) Sinclair ZX-Spectrum[^] clone, our then communist country "borrowed". BBC Micro-Computer. I remember we were trying to get a "print" statement working in teh first class but never got it to work. Also at that time we had an impression that computer know everything. We repeatedly asked the question: "Who was the Champion of Champions in the World Series Cup?" and of course we got an error each time. :)

I don't know what make and model it was, but back in the '70s at the Boston Museum of Science there was a computer on which one could play Tic Tac Toe! I'm pretty sure it wouldn't play Global Thermonuclear War. :-D I first learned BASIC-Plus on a PDP-11 in 1983. I didn't use a PC until about 1989 -- 386. The first computer I owned was a 486.

When I started college in 78 the science dept. had a IBM 1420?? we called it the coffin and could play a form of star trek on it. But they also had an Altair with the lights and switches on the front which I took home and had a ball with. Upon graduating I was hired to program in assembler on an Apple II using ProDOS. The owner of the company would come around periodically and pick up floppies of our work so he could compile them on his machine which had a 5MB external drive that sounded like a 737 when it was running. My first experience with a computer was in college, programming class in Fortran using punch cards! (1978 or 1979) My first experience on a "Non-Mainframe" computer was on a Fluke 1620 (?? Here's mine. At the age of 13, I managed to touch a PC[Thinks it's a 386] for the first time in a computer lab. It had a floppy booted MS DOS. That beeps loudly at boot up. When I first saw a computer I couldn't even guess it's purpose. I was even amazed by the fact that , if we press a key, it gets displayed on the screen!:-O [btw, I still wonder at it.that's a different thing]. I was tempted to type my name there. And the sequence : ME: C:>VUNIC. DOS: BAD COMMAND OR FILE NAME. (after thinking for a while about it's response) ME: BADCOMMAND DOS: BAD COMMAND OR FILENAME ME: FILENAME DOS : BAD COMMAND OR FILENAME ME: Asshole, you gave me only two options. :mad: As it tells you,I managed to use a pc at an early age, but still I did not manage to see how a punched card looks like. Back in the early 80s mine seemed to like the phrase "SYNTAX ERROR" and "PRESS PLAY ON TAPE". Also "OUT OF MEMORY". Although after some begging, I got my parents to shell out several hundred dollars for the 8K memory upgrade that made this error go away...
