Is it possible to put together your own laptop? I know a lot of people put together their own PC but i've never heard anyone put together their own laptop. Is it possible? Has someone done it? If so, how hard is it? Is it easier to just go to the store and buy one instead of putting one together. I can imagine the hardest part to get would be the screen and base... Maybe it's just too expensive...? Just wondering...

You can put together your own PC because the parts are standardized and mostly interchangeable. Laptops are largely custom designed with an eye on saving space and weight. You could try to build your own laptop, but you are not going to end up with anything as nice as what you could buy off the shelf. If you want a cheap laptop, look for a good refurbished model from a dealer you can trust. The computer shows around here have loads of used laptops and desktops at rock bottom prices.

You can put together a laptop, but getting a csae is very difficult (if not impossible) unless you are making it to fit in with a commercial models design. You could always make one that fitted in a shoe box, with the drives on one side and the screen in the lid :).

It's not possible, because laptops are proprietary hardware, as opposed to PC's where all the bits are interchangable. Christian The content of this post is not necessarily the opinion of my yadda yadda yadda. To understand recursion, we must first understand recursion.

Of course you can build your own laptop ! But will it work, and if so for how long ! 3 small factors that you need to incorporate into the design, 1. Heat dissipation 2. Eliminate vibrations from fans and speakers 3. Protect from minor shocks. As some one else suggested Build one for a shoe Box. Or Buy an old 486 and try modifying it to become a Laptop, just for practice (before buying a P4) Regardz Colin Davies Spot Palm Laptops

One thing you could do is build a custom embedded PC system that is essentially a laptop. You can buy embedded PC systems for lots of sources, and you can get the components pretty easily as well. But you'll have to figure out an enclosure for it all, which is the tough part. There are companies that sell bare-bones OEMable laptops, but you'll probably be better off buying one since there is a lot more effort put into making those systems as durable as possible.
