Recently I have heard about and/or read various articles talking about/hyping social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace, etc. I have even occasionally overheard people on the street make mention or their Facebook or MySpace profile. Personally after having looked at the sites, I now tend to assume that anyone who uses them is an idiot, unless something convinces me otherwise. Does anyone here actually use these things? If so why?

Recently, my neice and husband adopted a little girl from China. During the four weeks that they were away, they were able to stay in touch with a pretty large extended family. They uploaded daily, numerous pictures that told us all how they were getting along in starting to raise Sian, their new daughter. They could also tell us stories of things that happened to them. While I'm not a big fan of blogs and all of the goings on with social networking sites, I looked forward to reading each of the new entries they and others posted each day. For me this was a much better way for all of us, the extended family, to be able to stay in touch with the two of them than either the telephone or email. :)

I'm sorry, but myspace has been around for a long time now. It's been "popular" for 2 years at least. You're just now looking at them? Facebook has been around quite some time as well, 2 or 3 years. :|

I have been aware of it's popularity for a few years. I just never bothered to post on it till now. I'll try and be more responsive in the future :)

It's a way to stay in contact with folks. I just found 2 old friends last week from my teen years and have been chatting them up. MySpace is filled with ads and spam accounts. It errors out often, and it's rather ugly. But people use it because of the social aspect ("I have 253 friends!!!111eleven111") and also because they get to talk about themselves, which people generally like to do. (That's why blogging took off, right?) Facebook is a higher-class, more sophisticated Myspace with less spam, more spam bot-prevention measures, and user pages look sane in comparison to user-uploaded MySpace templates (dark gray text on black, flashing, marquee background, anyone?). It's the Yuppie version of MySpace.

I don't but I know a large number of artists, musicians, photographers, and paint-on-canvas artists who use it as free advertising. The standard human it may seem a bit narcisistic but for a struggling artist, it is a chance to be seen. For your average person, they have no reason to be seen, other than ... they want to be seen. I am on a few, but a blank profile so my friends show they have friends or something like that. I do understand some valid reasons for getting a profile. Yolanda Martinez[^] has a MySpace profile, not sure of others. She like other artists use it primarily as a promotional link back to their main site.

Not at all. The fact that you even admit the possibility of being an idiot precludes you from actually being one in real life. I'll be sure to take you off my idiot list.

I have not done anything at Facebook yet, but about a year ago I checked out what was happening with MySpace since everyone seemed to be talking abou it. I think one reason it grew so fast is that it allowed teens to post all kinds of content without restrictions. That appeared to be thier focus was teens and it worked to the tune of a huge profit. All these sites seem to try building a place where people share about themselves giving the space in a place of people. When you create a blog somewhere, it is usually just "out there" in the Internet space, but when you create a myspace account, you are instantly exposed to others. So, it boils down to if you want this kind of exposure or not.

I was talked into using Facebook a while ago. Most of the people i know through Fencing are on it so it has been a convenient way to keep in touch and exchange photos. As a side benefit, people i've lost touch with for over a decade have found my FB account and gotten back in touch. I'm far from fanatical about using it, i treat it more like an online address book.
