Yay[^]. Now i just need Warner to get with the program and make their stuff available... so i can finally use Amazon gift cards to buy a mix-disc of the half-decent TSO tracks. You know, the ones without vocals.

same artists as iTunes has DRM free, or did amazon get a wider selection?

The buying of mp3s is a mystery to me. Until it costs a lot less than buying a CD, I'd rather have a physical object, with artwork, etc.

Most of the time, i would too. However, there are a few albums in my collection that i regret buying, simply because there's only one or two tracks that i can actually stand to listen to. And then there are albums (such as those from TSO that i mentioned earlier) where i'd be happy to pay the cost of one album to get an album's worth of tracks taken from several different albums (TSO, if you're unfamiliar with them, are sort of a orchestral-rock juggernaut that play their own brand of christmas music. Good instrumentals, awful lyrics/vocals. I'm talkin' cat-mating-call-punch-your-radio-in-frustration-and-pain-it's-so-bad. If i ever gave in and purchased one of their albums, i'd end up immediately ripping and re-burning it, just to get rid of the tracks with singing).

That's funny because I remember distinctly the dissapointment when everything went from vinyl LP to CD that all the cool artwork and stickers and other stuff that used to be in LP's was now gone. Personally I would like to buy cheap unencumbered mp3's song by song because all modern albums suck and aren't worth buying whole and there are thousands of songs I would like to buy that were on old lp's I used to own and sold off or got stolen over the years. Having boxes or racks of cd's is just a pain, they take up space, they dissappear when you have a party, they need to be dusted, there is no real artwork or anything cool in any of them other than the cover itself which windows media player displays anyway.

Not the same, amazon is selling mp3's not aac encoded so you can play them anywhere.

Sadly it's US amazon only. You can't purchase from outside the U.S. On a separate note why does amazon.ca suck so badly compared to amazon.com? Same company but the Canadian site only sells the lines of products that Amazon.com started selling when they opened for business, i.e. books and cd's and dvd's only.

Totally disagreed. Most music does suck, but there's a ton of awesome glam and metal bands, and it's very rare for them to have only one or two good songs, more like one or two that are not as good as the others.

Actually, CD packaging is getting cooler and cooler, I've noticed. I do think LPs allowed for better covers, but there's still some excellent booklets and other packaging going on, to combat piracy, I presume.

Check out emusic. 30 songs for 10 bucks. They don't have Britney or Justin, but they do have Patty Griffin, John Hiatt, and Gillian Welch. Not to mention Ray Charles, Louis Armstrong, Wes Montgomery... They have the long tail, just not the head. And it's DRM free MP3. I heart emusic.

Apparently, you should be blaming the licensing agencies[^].

X| I tried Emusic, unless you are into obscure indy bands it's a waste of money. I like my music to have a hook and a beat and be well crafted with interesting lyrics, not some pointless wankfest of what to me sounds in general like folk-light of the worst kind from people that haven't done enough, haven't suffered enough in their lives to have anything interesting to say.

I've tried unsuccessfully to play these new fangled CD's on my record player, but I just get scratchy noises - no music. I've tried both sides but still nothing. Lots of scratches on the CD surface though and I had to buy 2 new needles. What gives??? I'm sticking with my groovy vinyl.

I'll admit that emusic isn't for everyone. I'll also admit that 90% of everything is crap, even on emusic. I will not admit that Ray Charles and Louis Armstrong, for example, haven't suffered enough in their lives to have anything interesting to say. I will not admit that the songs of John Hiatt are not well-crafted with interesting lyrics. I joined almost a year ago, and I've downloaded some of the best music in my collection. Music I wanted for years, but couldn't afford it new, couldn't find it used, and wasn't available from my music club. For me, it's been more than worthwhile.
