I've been hearing nice things about this beast (too heavy for my interest): Dell XPS 1730[^]. Even a physics chip to play with...

I've got a client who's got money to burn. When I say money to burn I mean he's big time liquid in cash. He asked me if quad core laptops were out or what the very fastest, highest performing laptop is right now with screaming graphics abilities and he wants it hot. Battery life... he could care less. Weight... he could care less. Pure processing and graphic workhorse is what he wants. I don't keep my nose that close on a lot of this stuff. For those of you pure and hard core gamers if someone gave you unlimited budget on a laptop with a 90 day purchase window what would you want. Are there 3 different machines that would make your short list? He's hot on Dell and since Dell is now Alienware that's convenient. So what's the prodigy beast out there right now?

Yes, but only in inches and not pixels. It's only 1680 x 1050 pixels. My 2+ yr old Inspiron 8600 does 1920 x 1200 on its LCD screen. /ravi

So, why doesn't he buy a big tower box with a 1KW power supply and loaded with graphics cards and memory and a 39" wide screen LCD and run down to Home Depot and screw in a couple hinges to mount the monitor so it can fold down onto the tower. Instant "laptop". Battery life? Who cares! Weight? Who cares! Marc

I've been looking for a laptop for myself and have settled on the asus brand. They have some pretty chunky laptops including one with hand stiched leather trim!

I've seen interesting machines in the Sony's Vaio series of notebooks. They look like an horrible giant mutatation of a normal laptop, but sure will make happy anyone who has loads of cash.

Well Alienware only has two so easy decision there: http://www.alienware.com/Product_Pages/notebook_all_default.aspx[^] There are rumours of quad core notebook cpu's from Intel in q3 '08. Recommend the Alienware, you can't go wrong with it in this scenario. He'll show it off to his buddies and Alienware has the cred that they'll agree it's cool and he will be happy with your recommendation.

IIRC intel's planning a 45nm quad laptop chip. Not sure if it's coming out with next months batch of chips or not.

Since when did 18 months equate to eons? I guess if I did not read any news, especially news related to the two companies, during the week this was prevalent, I would not really have a reason to know about it. Couple that with Alienware still operating independently under its existing name, and that's just a recipe for low-visibility news. Oh well...

Weight... he could care less. Pure processing and graphic workhorse is what he wants. I don't keep my nose that close on a lot of this stuff.
