How long can you go without sleeping?
-
Supposedly, Thai Ngochas been awake for the past 33 years, since he 'got a fever in '73.' He sure seems to have time on his hands... I wonder where he got that fever. I'd be willing to travel his steps and spot the disease, or perhaps sleeping is a disease, and he ran into the cure? :P. How long should we sleep? Some say we should sleep precisely 7, or it'll put us closer to our "final sleep". Personally, I find that you don't really need that much sleep, it simply depends on the body. I usually feel good with 5-7 hours, Sometimes a bit less, and a bit more on weekends. The most i've probably gone without sleeping is 48 hours.. how 'bout u? I wonder, is Thai Ngoc still awake? lol.. claims say he is.:zzz::zzz::zzz::zzz::zzz::zzz:

Four entire days without sleeping and programming... the fourth day (it was during august) I went to sleep because I was shivering due to the fact I was freezing... Some time ago my company was placed in a small building and the programmer (me) and all the other guys were together so it was very difficult to concentrate... at that time I decided to go work during nights in order to improve my working pace... what it happened was that when the other people arrived I felt OK, as with all the noise it was hard to fall asleep... After four days... it was impossible for me to continue and I went to sleep. PS: of course this happened at a very early stage in our business where we had to make great efforts in order to make our machines. Best regards...

I sleep about 7 hours, on weekends more like 8, rarely 9. But the average is 7.

Many years ago I was in the army and we had an exercise whose point was to see how long we went without sleep. This wasn't sitting around, it was hard physical labour. 3 1/2 days without sleep! (Augmented with Dextroamphetimines which were handed out legally by the MO). I slept for 28 hrs on our return!

I believe the most I have had was 2 nights in a row without any sleep. Trying to stay awake any longer for me is very difficult as caffeine looses its effectiveness and by that time my mind can only concentrate on one thing (its desire to be sleeping)..

Longest I've ever gone without sleep is a couple of 40 hour long days back in college. I'm neither willing nor able to pull that sort of thing now.

Since I am narcoleptic, without medication I can only go about 4 hours without really having to take a short nap. With medication I can usually get through the workday. Occasionally I will take a short nap at lunch or in the evening and sleep 7 hours during the night.

I suspect there's more to this story than is in that Wikipedia article. Why do I say this? While the physiological cause of sleep can be overcome (it is due to a steady increase in serotonin throughout the day, which is then metabolized by the brain while you sleep, and when it falls to a certain level you wake up), the neurological effects of lack of sleep cannot be. The brain physically requires sleep to process and integrate information. The seeming upper maximum humans can go without any sort of sleep is approximately 4 days. After that, you won't think you're sleeping, when in fact you'll actually start having "micro-naps" - short bouts when the brain falls asleep for a minute or two every 15-20 minutes. You won't be aware it's happening because you're so disoriented, but it does. People who have not slept in 4 days can SEEM like they are operating consciously, but that's only because the brain is incredibly good at running on auto pilot. If they were to go and sleep until they were completely recharged, they would remember very little of the preceding 4 days, if they remember anything at all. Memory is one of the first things to go when the brain gets overtaxed, because it's a low priority operation when survival is at stake. For my own part, the most I've ever gone was about 2.5 days without sleep; after that, I slept for nearly 2 days. I typically sleep about 6 hours per night; if I sleep more than that, I actually wake up with a severe headache.

Well anyone who actually *works* for a living is not going very long without sleep. I mean physical work not sitting in front of a computer all day. If I get less than 8 hours a night I feel like a bag of shit the next day.
