I went to Chucky Cheese Pizza a while back. They have a machine there that takes your picture and then produces a sketch of your face. Then, after a bit of churning, the machine spits out a sketch of your face. I thought at first that it was a special camera, but then I saw a flyer where a graphic artist had done the same thing with the face of the lead singer of a local rock band. Is there some kind of trick to get the outlines of items in an image that I don't know about? Will

It's magic, just leave at that.

There are tons of "sketching" algorithms. I'm certain they take a picture of you, apply some color filters, do some edge detection, apply the sketching process on the image (create random strokes with the direction, pressure based on the orientation of the egdes) and spits it out. no biggie.

Isn't that like the woodpecker bird in the Flintstone's cameras?

                      It's called image processing.

My image processing articles include one that just moves each pixel a random amount based on a maximum distance you specify, and even that does a half reasonable job of making an image look as if it could have been painted.

By the end of sentence two I was starting to think that the machine was going to produce a pizza with your face on. Imagine my disappointment. :sigh:
