Yes, it's time for one of those "how many times does this question get asked on CP?" questions. So, what do you recommend? Marc

I use copy commander, it gets the job done for me. Compared to the other out there, I can't tell you how it ranks. Copy commander is the only one I have used, but it's simple, and has all the features I use and need.

i use EMC Retrospect. semi-weekly, automated, incremental backups of three PCs to a NAS, and once-monthly full backups to a USB HD. works great.

Windows Home Server :) It's really great for home backups, everything is done automatically and you can restore a complete computer from one of the cd's you get with it, just pop it in, select backup and restore computer.

Acronis Workstation. I have two 500 GB external USB 2 drives with Acronis set to do incremental backups if possible (if not possible, it does a full backup and any after that will be incremental). I backup several network shares, a bunch of mapped drives and the main project and data drives every night. Each morning I check the backup logs to make sure everything worked (Acronis emails them to me), then I put the drive in use in the fireproof safe and hook up the other drive. When the drives are 3/4 full, I erase one so that it starts fresh with a full backup. When the other drive is nearly full, I erase it. And so on and so on. I wind up with about 6 months of backup history by doing it this way. Cheers, Drew.

this is my NEW recommendation for backup - A - remove cover on "computer" B - open hard drive C - used HCL acid ( about 1 quart ) D - pour all over the harddrive wait about 1 hour - that will fix almost any issues you have but just in case - if you are in a multi-story building with windows that open - open the window and throw the whole mess out into the street - that will really fix the problem. This is a new project which I'm hoping IBM will get behind in a big way - I call it OEEB open ended eternal backup I hope this will be bigger than RAID

SyncBack SE is a great backup tool. I use it to back up my wife's XP laptop to my Linux box over ftp.

If only there were some sort of way a web site could compile in one place frequently asked questions; something fast and easy to access, maybe a good word for it would be something unique like the Hawaiian language word for quick "wiki" I think is the word they use. Some day, someone, somewhere will develop that technology, then look out world! ;)

I wouldn't be me if I didn't occassionally answer a question with another question, and I am well overdue. :) so here it goes.... What do you need out of your backups? No, seriously. You have two orders of backups and several different methodologies. The two general orders are disk images, and file images. A disk image lets you correctly reproduce an entire disk to a new disk rapidly and directly, sometimes very handy. A file image streams files into an archive and pulls them back just the same. About the main difference is restoration. A disk image doesn't often need a formatted drive, and can even restore working operating system images. File backups are often the worst at backing up the operatng system. I use DriveImageXML http://www.runtime.org/dixml.htm[^] which is a bit of both. Combined with a BartPE boot disk I have restored OS images. We also use Ghost in some projects for archiving working images.

Having gone through way too many tape drives, removable hard disks and other technology that required me to have proprietary software (and perhaps hardware) installed to get my data back, I've gone to an extremely simple and effective system that I've used for years. I use the command line version of WinZip (pkzip would work fine if you can find it) in batch files that run overnight to create zip files of directory structures where I care about the data, and maintain a 7 day history as well as periodic archival to CD. Because the zip format is portable and well known, it means that I can get to my data and restore it anytime, anywhere. In fact, since Windows supports the zip format these days, I usually don't even have to worry about installing software to get to my data. It's also drop dead simple to open a zip file, find a particular item I'm looking for, drag & drop, and it's restored. Sometimes the most effective system is the least impressive. :)

I am not perfect but I try to be better than those before me. So those who come after me will be better than I am.

Yes, it's time for one of those "how many times does this question get asked on CP?" questions. So, what do you recommend? Marc

bacula. www.bacula.org[^] At this point I have backed up 15TB of data from about 50 windows and linux clients. This was done mostly on a Exabyte Magnum 224 LTO2 autochanger although I have DVD, DLT and disk storage in use as well. For me bacula works very very well, although it does not have an enterprise gui yet. The free user support is significantly better than veritas and retrospect. I have licensed versions of both and I have given up on them because bacula is just better and it is not designed to extort money from me which I can not say about veritas.
