Having gone through way too many tape drives, removable hard disks and other technology that required me to have proprietary software (and perhaps hardware) installed to get my data back, I've gone to an extremely simple and effective system that I've used for years. I use the command line version of WinZip (pkzip would work fine if you can find it) in batch files that run overnight to create zip files of directory structures where I care about the data, and maintain a 7 day history as well as periodic archival to CD. Because the zip format is portable and well known, it means that I can get to my data and restore it anytime, anywhere. In fact, since Windows supports the zip format these days, I usually don't even have to worry about installing software to get to my data. It's also drop dead simple to open a zip file, find a particular item I'm looking for, drag & drop, and it's restored. Sometimes the most effective system is the least impressive. :)

bacula. www.bacula.org[^] At this point I have backed up 15TB of data from about 50 windows and linux clients. This was done mostly on a Exabyte Magnum 224 LTO2 autochanger although I have DVD, DLT and disk storage in use as well. For me bacula works very very well, although it does not have an enterprise gui yet. The free user support is significantly better than veritas and retrospect. I have licensed versions of both and I have given up on them because bacula is just better and it is not designed to extort money from me which I can not say about veritas.

Veritas Backup Exec for server side backups - slightly unintuitive interface but a good workhorse. Acronis for client side backups - acronis is cheap and reliable - just make sure you verify the backup before considering it as safe!

Backups are for wimps. Surely it's better to have the heady delight of knowing that your precious 1s and 0s are living in mortal fear of the first random power surge to touch the delicate infrastructure of your hard drive.

Cobian backup[^] Fast, easy to configure, and free. I prefer version 7 to v.8, but it's horses for courses.
