All, Is creating images for web wholly an artists job? Is it possible that a programmer like me can also create nice images for my web pages. What do I need and what is the general approach. I wonder how some people (programmers) put up their web sites with great images. :) Onkar

Anyone can create good images as long as they can transfer their creative ideas to a graphics package. Unfortunately, for many peopole this is just as hard (if not harder) than transfering creative ideas to paper. Personally, I use Macromedia Fireworks for the vast majority of the artwork I produce (http://www.salamandersoftware.biz/services/graphics.htm), but it's all a matter of taste; whatever works for you (and you can afford). If you need someone to do it for you, I can provide that service ;) I recently did a logo for Michael Martin's company, Paradigm Solutions (see the website link above). Derek Lakin. Complicated story that you're better off getting Michael to explain. Unfortunately it has nothing to do with Michael's current employement situation :( Derek Lakin. I wish I was what I thought I was when I wished I was what I am. Salamander Software Ltd.

Christian Graus wrote: Michael has a company ? When did this happen ? Christian, it is a small Sole Trader's company I have had for about 4 years now. It was set up when I was doing a a fair bit of consulting on the side for small businesses and Mum and Dad's back in 1998. Don't know how it flaired up but as the resident 'Computer Expert' my name and number got around to quite a few people. Selling hardware and setting up/fixing software was the name of the game. Pretty much just allowed me to claim use of car and a few other things to minimize my tax. I hadn't bothered to close it down, though I haven't done anything with it since then. In the last couple of months I have done a bit of this consulting stuff for friends of friends which I got paid for. So I put it through my pseudo-company to keep it legal. Since I have been doing my manual grunt work in the warehouse I have also been using the pseudo-company. This has been more to do with not paying the tax on the money till the end of the financial year than anything else. The gross money barely covers living expenses so I can't afford to pay the tax now. A couple of weeks ago I posted a thread in the Lounge asking about company names and logos. This was prompted by looking at the links some people have in their signatures who have their own companies. I have been very impressed with the creativity of the names and in some cases the logos they had. I have never been able to come up with anything that I thought was any good, but that could easily be lack of imagination and ability. So anyway Derek mentioned he could do graphics after mentioning his company. I mentioned I was unemployed and broke to which he said no worries can't spend time on a freebie (as it is a business) but that he would doodle in the boredom time at work. Sends me a first draft which I thought was brilliant and there you have it. By the way the old Sole Trader pseudo-company could be something useful for you with the articles you write and possibly any other computer related stuff you may do. Download Macromedia Fireworks... very very easy to use and to create very nice images.. Just remember that you will have to put in a bit of time. They won't just happen really quickly :-)
