No work

great my boss just left telling me he forgot to analyse the next piece of programming I have to do and since I finished yesterday I don't have nothing to do :sigh:. This might sound nice to some of you but doing nothing for 8 hours is going to be very boring. Anyone have any suggestions to keep me busy (reading material, small programs, cartoons, ...)?

Used to happen to me all the tme. At first, I just learned new things/wrote articles. Eventually it happened on such a long term basis that I found other work that paid me while my boss didn't give me anything to do.
Christian Graus - Microsoft MVP - C++ "I am working on a project that will convert a FORTRAN code to corresponding C++ code.I am not aware of FORTRAN syntax" ( spotted in the C++/CLI forum )

I had just short of 3 months like that in my last job. I was on the point of suing for constructive dismissal. I spent most of the 3 months becoming an expert on the 'freak show' that is the world of alternative energy. Everything from the Pierce Arrow to Quantum Vaccum pumps, hoaxes, geniuses, disappearances, failures and triumphs, scams and neat ideas. I also wrote a lot of code, mostly generic stuff, porting tuples (The implementation that's now in the Boost library) to VC6 and experiments with extreme exception safety, memory management etc. I also know just how frustrating it can be to sit with nothing to do for 8 hours a day when you've got loads of ideas and want to work. I hope it's not a regular occurance for you.
Nothing is exactly what it seems but everything with seems can be unpicked.

I still remember having to write your own code in FORTRAN rather than be a cut and paste merchant being pampered by colour coded Intellisense - ahh proper programming - those were the days :)

I think your answer to the questionner was excellent. Here is a stock answer I plagiarised from another poster... "I am too busy to decipher the text speak, but I will post a programming question in the lounge for you, as I can see from your lack of ability in the English Language that you could not read the "Do Not Post Programming Questions In The Lounge" thing at the top of the page." :)

Dude... it's called an 8 hour lunch. I used to be an expert at it (when required). If you need any tips, here are a few: (A) Arrive in the morning, turn on the computer, lights, leave a jacket or something to show you were there, and close your office door. (B) Take a 4 hour break. (C) After such break, show back up, walk through the halls looking as if you are doing something important so that other people see you. (D) Take another 4 hour break. (E) After that, come back, turn off computer, office lights, pick up your jacket, and leave the door open. Repeat as needed. If anyone actually inquires as to where you are while gone, someone else will say something like -- I dunno where he is, but his computer is on and his jacket is in his office. Or, I saw him walking around the halls earlier. Etc. Bonus points are awarded if you can also time it so a manager sees you arriving before, or leaving after most everyone else.

I quit on job a year ago beceause they had no work for me for over 4 months (I got so bored that on the drive home every day I almost fell asleep) so quit that one and worked for 2 months in the entertainment buss, was 3 months unemployed (is also really boring but at least one can go out then), and found this job 6 months ago. I'v had days where there wasn't much to do before but never a whole day and never nothing so up to now it's not so bad

I programme in access,VB.net, C# and java (atm) vague idea of future tasks well yes but there to vague to do anything with them. All I know is I'll have to make a few forms (in access) and I'll have to make 2 vb.net (small) programmes in the next 3 months or so and that's it (not much information) I think I'll just start working on a small programme I've been wanting to make for some time now. at least if I can get my visual studio on local pc to work

Access???:omg: If it were me, I'd ponder over my fate and how I got around to programming in Access.;P Seriously though, the net offers plenty of things to know and learn.

You wouldn't believe the number of consulting jobs that still offer Access "programming" as a service. And you further wouldn't believe how many of their customers choose that option... :~
Please don't bother me... I'm hacking right now. Don't look at me like that - doesn't anybody remember what "hacking" really means? :sigh:
