Where to find the small companies?
-
I prefer working at small companies but never really know where to look to find ones that have openings for developers. Any ideas where to look?
I think that generally you've made a good start as it is. Networking is probably the best way that I can think of. Most of the people at my company found out about the job because they knew somebody there.
Some people sail through life on a bed of roses like a knife slicing through butter.

I really have no idea. I got lucky landing my job at my small company. I was recruited through word of mouth from an existing employee. I don't think you would find anything on the big job posting websites. Most small companies(as far as I know of) don't even post their job openings. They rely on word of mouth from their existing employees, and people calling them and bring in their resume.

I've found my high visibility on this site to lead to a lot of work with smaller companies, quite a few have contacted me with work after seeing my articles or gettng an answer or two from me.

Chambers of commerce, business clubs. Seriously - a lot of smaller companies will do a lot of networking in areas like this. Here in the UK I spend a lot of time talking to other businesspeople and staffing needs do come up. It would be worth you talking to the chambers of commerce/business clubs in your area to see where the companies are and if they are likely to be looking for staff. This is a good way to find out a bit about the companies as well. There's no point in applying to a company as an ASP.NET developer if all they do is develop SCADA systems.

I assume that the trees around the offices are dwarf conifers - possibly some bonsai.

Personally, I used LinkedIn. I have found alot of people I used to know through it and have made some very valuable contacts as well. I don't have any kind of financial interest in LinkedIn, but I have talked to several people about jobs on it. http://www.linkedin.com[^] That may help you find the small company that you're looking for! Good luck!

For the most part you are probably right. I'm in the late stages of the selection process for a company with 15 employees now. I'm from Canada, they are from the US. Definitely not word of mouth there. They had the job posted on, wait for it ... Slashdot :)

Local newspapers are one source. Smaller companies like to run ads in local papers where they cost less. Word of mouth is still probably the best source. I got my current job that way. My ex-wife's husband told her about an opening and she told me about it.
