Windows Update

I set Windows Update on all the machines under my belt to download automatically but NOT to install any patch/fix. I want to be in control as to when and which updates I want to apply. This has worked for me for long time. Recently I have noticed in more than one machine, Windows Update informs me of an update it downloaded and it keeps the icon in a task bar. As usual I plan to apply at a later time, because I don't to interrupt what I am doing and restart the machine unless I have to. After some time, Windows Update Kicks in and applies the change by it self. Worst is, it reboots the machine. This has been happening while I am away from the workstation.:| My Windows update setting is "down load automatically but ask me when to install it":(( Any one who have faced similar "brute force" update?

People has seen this happen too, since this last or 2nd last update, Automatic update settings changes. My pet hate, why does IE7 revert its font settings after windows update?

You are not the only person suffering this problem. I have seen this exact same thing happen on several PCs of mine at home; and have seen plenty of posts from others about similar happenings. I've resigned myself to the fact that Microsoft can and will push updates out to machines as they feel like it. One of my development machines, I have the update service turned off and have a rule setup in my Firewall software to block all incoming/outgoing to/from that service, across all protocols. So even if it does start itself, it's not going to be talking with MS anytime soon.

this brilliant feature has resulted in at least two early-morning phone calls to myself because one of our servers was down. windows update automatically re-started the servers. additionally, our servers have this other brilliant feature of prompting 'f1 to continue, f2 to setup' (from the bios) when they are restarted. noone seems to know how to change this (they are old dell servers). another cool thing is that our ups is as useful as a boat anchor when the power goes out.

I usually set to "notify but don't download/install". That way I have to wait a little for the update to download, but at least I don't have the problem you're having.

this brilliant feature has resulted in at least two early-morning phone calls to myself because one of our servers was down. windows update automatically re-started the servers. additionally, our servers have this other brilliant feature of prompting 'f1 to continue, f2 to setup' (from the bios) when they are restarted. noone seems to know how to change this (they are old dell servers). another cool thing is that our ups is as useful as a boat anchor when the power goes out.

Since Window Update took your servers down, how about it add functionality to simulate F1 hit on reboot? :rolleyes: looking for hiding place before the barrage of hullabaloo starts....:zzz:

i just use disasters to justify more money, without doing anything to solve the problem.

I usually set to "notify but don't download/install". That way I have to wait a little for the update to download, but at least I don't have the problem you're having.
Same here. I've not ever had mine just up and start installing on its own.
