I've a new laptop and I think its only right that I buy myself a fun game to go along with it. The last game I purchased was Doom 2 so its been a while. I'd like a first person shooter game that I can get a lot of fun out of without too much effort. I just want to spend a half hour every now and then making things go boom. The laptop is a 2ghz dual core, 3gb ram, and I think an Nvida video card with 256mb ram. I played Call Of Duty a few years ago and really enjoyed that. I'd prefer a game set in the present or historical past rather than a fantasy world. Any recommendations? -- modified at 3:17 Tuesday 16th October, 2007 Thanks to everyone who's replied :)

Now that brings back some memories. I'd just finished a c programming course at TAFE when the source code was released and I spent hours pooring over it

You can give Half-Life[^] a try. For a hard-core shoot-em-up, Quake 3 / Arena[^] is pretty good. My choice on any new computer would be Age of Empires[^], but that's not really what you want, is it? A couple more I can think of off the top of my head are Max Payne[^] and Prince of Persia[^].

for WWII games, Medal Of Honor Allied Assault was pretty good. i hear good things about the newer installations in the series, too. Half Life, even though it's not a historical game, is really good.

I know you said you'd prefer a present/historical game rather than a fantasy world, but I'm going to mention Oblivion[^] anyway. :P If you push the graphics all the way up, it should give your machine a decent workout. And if you do what I did and use a bow with stealth, you can really get into the atmosphere of the game - creeping around corners, sniping Goblins in the back with poisoned arrows etc  If you ever played Diablo, you might also like Titan Quest[^]. It's basically Diablo in 3D with knobs on and set in mythological times of legend. Yea, I'm completely ignoring your stated game preferences - I just thought I'd mention things that I would play.

Far Cry would do the job I reckon. Set in the present. Stuff blows up. Bad guys die in huge numbers :)

Call of Duty 2/3, though 2 is better than 3, or wait for Call of Duty 4:Modern Combat BioShock - this one actually more RPG than FPS, but with outstanding story line.

Buy the Orange Box from Steam. It has all the half life 2 games/stories and Team Fortress which is a team based multi player game. also it comes with a puzzle game called portal which is fun, funny and very mind bending in its use of 3d graphics.

You must play Company of Heroes which is an WWII Realtime Strategy with good graphics and atmosphere. It's also has a new expansion.
