I've a new laptop and I think its only right that I buy myself a fun game to go along with it. The last game I purchased was Doom 2 so its been a while. I'd like a first person shooter game that I can get a lot of fun out of without too much effort. I just want to spend a half hour every now and then making things go boom. The laptop is a 2ghz dual core, 3gb ram, and I think an Nvida video card with 256mb ram. I played Call Of Duty a few years ago and really enjoyed that. I'd prefer a game set in the present or historical past rather than a fantasy world. Any recommendations? -- modified at 3:17 Tuesday 16th October, 2007 Thanks to everyone who's replied :)

OK, you said no fantasy but we'll just ignore that... BioShock, Orange Box (Half Life 2 Episode 2, Portal, Team Fortress 2 and many more), Quake Wars, BattleField 2142 and give the Unreal Torunament 3 demo a go. And for something a bit more sedate but which I love; The Settlers.

Play Hitman - Blood Money[^]. From what you've asked in the post, and from your system configuration, this would be just perfect. The game just rocks. You play the role of an assassinator. [EDIT] Not to forget CounterStrike, but if only you plan on a LAN. Playing it with bots suck. [/EDIT]

If you haven't tryed it yet: just buy World of Warcraft. Just to see how is the biggest selling online game (and social phenomenon) ever. You will thank(or course) me later.

San Andreas maybe? You'll get old before you squeeze out all there is to it. The graphics are kinda crappy, but the feeling of freedom and power is unparalleled . Tons of violence and also very funny. An odd combination actually. But for me it is The Game.

I recommend against. It will ruin your social life and also you'll give them money on a monthly basis for that. It really is an ANTI-social phenomenon. -- modified at 4:07 Tuesday 16th October, 2007

HL2 Orange Box is the way to go if you want a FPS, I would recommend that, too. From war-oriented historical games - Medal of Honor: Airborne was released recently and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (not historical, obviously) is due in November.

Have recently bought Half life 2:episode 2 and quake:wars, would recommend finding the demos for these as they can be a little power hungry - but demo's are free :-) (both are recommended btw) Have also been playing lots of Oblivion and dungeon runners, both are more sword'n'sorcery rpg but involve lots of hacking stuff up and exploring. However for your spec I would recommend Quake 3 above them all, its old but still fast energetic and challenging for any player.

I'd recommend Prey for single player as it has cool game features (it's a bit SF). For multi player I'd recommend Call of Duty 2 and and an application called "All seeing eye" for searching for multi player games...and if you didn't try it, multi player gaming rocks :D

Are you insane??:wtf: When Quake 3 came out back in '99 it needed something like 300 MHz processor and an 8 MB Video Card to run! With your spec you can really go for almost everything there is out there.

Hm, I remember playing Quake 1 (!) at something like 200MHz, 4MB Graphics... and if I remember corectly it didn't really "run" much in highest details & resolution.

Am I insane? Possibly, but when I said 'spec' I was also referring to stated requirements (fast, fps, etc) :-) Aside from that am always dubious about spec'd up laptops ability to play games, mainly due to the amount of people who complain to me 'we bought this laptop for n expecting it to play Doom 3 at high res only to be sadly disappointed with screen refresh rates and general power drain, loadup times, etc' As stated I think the poster should try Half life 2 and quake wars demo's to assess potential, quake 3 is the safe option because I still play it on a high spec'd PC and it just keeps getting FASTER ;-)

So many to choose from, I'd say BioShock (had good reviews) but is set in a fantasy world, The new Call of Duty4: Modern Warfare(release 5 Nov), or Half-Life(the orange box) which should keep you busy for a while. have a look at www.gamespot.com for more info. MK

For a cheap, realistic online FPS, I'd have to recomend Counter-Strike. I think through steam it's now about $10/ £5, and you get the condition zero mod, which allows you to play offline against bots. www.steampowered.com
