I've a new laptop and I think its only right that I buy myself a fun game to go along with it. The last game I purchased was Doom 2 so its been a while. I'd like a first person shooter game that I can get a lot of fun out of without too much effort. I just want to spend a half hour every now and then making things go boom. The laptop is a 2ghz dual core, 3gb ram, and I think an Nvida video card with 256mb ram. I played Call Of Duty a few years ago and really enjoyed that. Hey this is awesome game, will enjoy it - "Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones", the next best ever game after Doom and Wolfenstien goes from console mode to real 3D mode needing a graphic enhancer boosting your enthu. :mad: -- Without a strive for perfection I would be terribly bored.

For a cheap, realistic online FPS, I'd have to recomend Counter-Strike. I think through steam it's now about $10/ £5, and you get the condition zero mod, which allows you to play offline against bots. www.steampowered.com

Talk about memories - I got a copy of Wolfenstein from the developers - at the time, I was trying to make a go of it as a shareware vendor: (back before most of the world was on line, AOL had a DOS version, and online charges were per-minute). I had played Swords-of-Glass (highly recommended) and all of the Might & Magic series available up to that time. W3D was a single-sitting event to win after the experience of the more serious dungeons. But - a recommendation I will alway give: ROGUE It's been around forever, still has fans maintaining (the source-code_s_ are available), and it's just always fun. No graphics needed. Every game is different. It took me five years to win the first time (Epyx Rogue). It can be found at the SourceForge http://roguelikes.sauceforge.net/pub/[^], and there are sites dedicated to it. You may wish to check out the wikipedia. A lot of strategy and decision making for an apparently simple game. You learn how to play, which means better decision making, but never know what's ahead.

Why have nobody mention Postal 2 ? It must be the best game ever, if you just want to spen a litle time gameing, But beware you can quikly finde you self play for hours, the missons in the game is simple just pick op your pay check at the office, and pick up a bottle of milk in the local shop. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postal%C2%B2[^] Btw. Dude! You've got to get "The Orange Box". It comes w/ Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Episode 1, Half-Life 2: Episode 2, Teamfortress 2 and Portal. Every one of these games is awesome and all for the price of a single game! http://half-life2.com/ Portal is nothing short of amazing. It's a puzzle game.

I also really enjoyed the original Call of Duty. So far, it's been the most immersive game I've played on my PC (awesome sound really helps). Here's some others: Max Payne 1 & 2: Gritty New York noir-style ith a bit of John Woo/Matrix effects. This is hands down the only game that has made me feel like I was watching a (great) movie and not just playing a game. Very good. F.E.A.R: Playing this now (when I can). Nice graphics, lots of fun and explosives. Putting a large spike through someone's head and watching them get pinned to the wall by it is just too cool. Doom 3: If you really want to push your system, give this a go. It is sci-fi, but if you're up for a game with the most OSM/minute (Oh SH** moments) I think this wins.

You might consider Wolfenstien Enemy Territory (ww2 setting) or the new Enemy Territory Quake Wars (fantasy future, but not too much so, and maps set all around the Earth). Both are online multiplayer games without monthly fees. Should be easy to find a pick up game and blow off steam by blowing up some stuff ... might be harder to stop after only 1/2 hour ;-)

Depends on what you're looking for in a game, really, but Valve just released that "Orange Box", and for $50, it might be just the thing you're looking for ... This game pack is worth it, none-the-less; some of the best games around today, and cheap.

Heh, you got so many replies already but I'll reply anyway. As many suggested, you can buy Orange Box[^] which contains Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2 Episode 1 and 2 and Portal, all four games are set in the same universe which is while not real, revolves on earth. If you decide to buy it I'd also recommend getting Half Life[^] Collectors Box 2 which contains complete collection of the first Half Life series (including 2 expansions) and play that first before getting into HL2. While certain portions of the series do not fit your "30 minute gameplay" requirements as they can be intense or draw you in, many consider the series one of the best FPS created. A huge part to the success of the game is the storytelling, Half Life series was the first FPS with real well developed storyline, not only that, the game put you in the middle of it, you witness the story unfolding through your own eyes instead of it being narrated through the pre-rendered cut-scenes. Now that that's done, some other suggestions closer to your original "half hoour every now and then making things go boom" requirement: -Serious Sam[^] series (3 games total), set in fantasy world, and sometimes a little intense, but immense fun and good graphics, no brain teasers, just killing hundreds of enemies at once -Painkiller[^] (gold edition), very much like Serious Sam, just not as intense, definitely suited for 20 minute gameplay If we relax requirement about FPS and introduce "third person view" option there are a few other fun games that can be played 30 minutes at a time: -Prince of Persia[^] (3 games) remake of a classic game with bettery storyline and gameplay -

If you want to play online, Dungeon Runners is a lot of fun. I play it on a laptop with specs similar to yours. Its free for the basic stuff and you have the option to play by yourself or with others. Or just chat, I've done all three. The crowd ranges from the 15 year old to over 40 - I'm in the 40 range :). Oblivion is fun, but I hate the new UI, I wish it were more like Morrowind - it rocks still!! Try Fear, yes BioShock and Rogue Spear - Las Vegas. I have them in my library of games. Sadly though, I'm addicted to Evercrack 2 (EveryQuest II) and World of Warcraft.:sigh::^):-O
