I've a new laptop and I think its only right that I buy myself a fun game to go along with it. The last game I purchased was Doom 2 so its been a while. I'd like a first person shooter game that I can get a lot of fun out of without too much effort. I just want to spend a half hour every now and then making things go boom. The laptop is a 2ghz dual core, 3gb ram, and I think an Nvida video card with 256mb ram. I played Call Of Duty a few years ago and really enjoyed that. I'd prefer a game set in the present or historical past rather than a fantasy world. Any recommendations? -- modified at 3:17 Tuesday 16th October, 2007 Thanks to everyone who's replied :)

I also really enjoyed the original Call of Duty. So far, it's been the most immersive game I've played on my PC (awesome sound really helps). Here's some others: Max Payne 1 & 2: Gritty New York noir-style ith a bit of John Woo/Matrix effects. This is hands down the only game that has made me feel like I was watching a (great) movie and not just playing a game. Very good. F.E.A.R: Playing this now (when I can). Nice graphics, lots of fun and explosives. Putting a large spike through someone's head and watching them get pinned to the wall by it is just too cool. Doom 3: If you really want to push your system, give this a go. It is sci-fi, but if you're up for a game with the most OSM/minute (Oh SH** moments) I think this wins.

You might consider Wolfenstien Enemy Territory (ww2 setting) or the new Enemy Territory Quake Wars (fantasy future, but not too much so, and maps set all around the Earth). Both are online multiplayer games without monthly fees. Should be easy to find a pick up game and blow off steam by blowing up some stuff ... might be harder to stop after only 1/2 hour ;-)

Depends on what you're looking for in a game, really, but Valve just released that "Orange Box", and for $50, it might be just the thing you're looking for ... Check out the review here[^] -- modified at 14:22 Tuesday 16th October, 2007 Sorry, missed your remarks about the game not being "in the future" in your original post. This game pack is worth it, none-the-less; some of the best games around today, and cheap.

You missed the part of the OP where he said "make things go boom". For his requirements, Solitaire is not the ultimate game, Minesweeper is. :)

Heh, you got so many replies already but I'll reply anyway. As many suggested, you can buy Orange Box[^] which contains Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2 Episode 1 and 2 and Portal, all four games are set in the same universe which is while not real, revolves on earth. If you decide to buy it I'd also recommend getting Half Life[^] Collectors Box 2 which contains complete collection of the first Half Life series (including 2 expansions) and play that first before getting into HL2. While certain portions of the series do not fit your "30 minute gameplay" requirements as they can be intense or draw you in, many consider the series one of the best FPS created. A huge part to the success of the game is the storytelling, Half Life series was the first FPS with real well developed storyline, not only that, the game put you in the middle of it, you witness the story unfolding through your own eyes instead of it being narrated through the pre-rendered cut-scenes. Now that that's done, some other suggestions closer to your original "half hoour every now and then making things go boom" requirement: -Serious Sam[^] series (3 games total), set in fantasy world, and sometimes a little intense, but immense fun and good graphics, no brain teasers, just killing hundreds of enemies at once -Painkiller[^] (gold edition), very much like Serious Sam, just not as intense, definitely suited for 20 minute gameplay If we relax requirement about FPS and introduce "third person view" option there are a few other fun games that can be played 30 minutes at a time: -Prince of Persia[^] (3 games) remake of a classic game with bettery storyline and gameplay -

If you want to play online, Dungeon Runners is a lot of fun. I play it on a laptop with specs similar to yours. Its free for the basic stuff and you have the option to play by yourself or with others. Or just chat, I've done all three. The crowd ranges from the 15 year old to over 40 - I'm in the 40 range :). Oblivion is fun, but I hate the new UI, I wish it were more like Morrowind - it rocks still!! Try Fear, yes BioShock and Rogue Spear - Las Vegas. I have them in my library of games. Sadly though, I'm addicted to Evercrack 2 (EveryQuest II) and World of Warcraft.:sigh::^):-O

The orange box from valve for $50 you get 5 excellent games, Half Life 2 Half Life 2 episode 1 Half Life 2 episode 2 Portal - the best game of them all :) Team Fortress 2 I couldn't recommend this more and it's great value for money. If anyone ask you tell them that you're increasing you problem solving ability through games such as portal :)

Try FEAR and Advent Rising. For something really different, Indigo Prophecy. Upcoming, check out Hellgate: London. You'd probably better pick up Halo 1 and 2. If you really want to soak up some time, go for an MMO like World of Warcraft or maybe Guild Wars for a more bite-size game.

Thank you for the link! I loved that game! I had a friend who was a Professor at Arizona State University that was always playing that game. He snuck me in and let me see all their main frames, (one was an IBM PDP-1170's, I don't remember the other names, we just happened to have used that ASU computer in High School -- via modems, when they worked!) and their Chromatics III!!! A Mega$$$ graphics computer. Awe the days of a misspent youth!

I know it's a couple of years old now, but Battlefield2 is the greatest shooter out there. I have tons of games, but I keep coming back to BF2. I've actually started to wear out the disk. Single player never gets old, but on-line is fun forever. They probably still have the free demo up for download, which never expires but limits you to one map. The demo allows on-line play too, and it's tough to get bored with that one map. I played it for months before I finally broke down and bought it.

Actually any of the Hitman series. Personally I loved 2 the best, but 3 and 4 were great too. To do them right you have to put some thought and work into the missions, but it's great fun to go around blasting everything that moves too.

Are you insane??:wtf: When Quake 3 came out back in '99 it needed something like 300 MHz processor and an 8 MB Video Card to run! With your spec you can really go for almost everything there is out there.

Q3 would set off my board's heat sensors. After a couple minutes of playing it would start squealing really loud and throttle the processor. I had to mount three extra case fans with double sided foam tape all aiming at the processor to be able to play. I think it was an AMD I had, don't remember.

Well, all I can suggest at this moment are Bioshock, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars and the upcoming Call of Duty 4. Call of Duty has finally moved to a modern setting. Check out this demo level walkthrough: http://files.filefront.com/cod4mwwmv/;8791456;/fileinfo.html Damn, I didn't like the fixed paths through the Call of Duty games, but this one is the bomb!

Life would be so much easier if I had the source code!

I know you said you'd prefer a present/historical game rather than a fantasy world, but I'm going to mention Oblivion[^] anyway. :P If you push the graphics all the way up, it should give your machine a decent workout. And if you do what I did and use a bow with stealth, you can really get into the atmosphere of the game - creeping around corners, sniping Goblins in the back with poisoned arrows etc  If you ever played Diablo, you might also like Titan Quest[^]. It's basically Diablo in 3D with knobs on and set in mythological times of legend. Yea, I'm completely ignoring your stated game preferences - I just thought I'd mention things that I would play.

First game I bought for my PS3 in March, and still loving every second of it. My current character is a custom class (Shadow Mage) I'd originally created for Morrowind. Very stealth oriented, she has an insanely high Sneak skill. Her Marksman skill is high enough that she can zoom in on targets. My only complaint is I wish they'd included crossbows in the game... Flynn

I'm surprised that no one has recommended "Return to Wolfenstein". It's a great WWII shooter with a bit of Doom thrown in for good measure. -Hawk
