I've a new laptop and I think its only right that I buy myself a fun game to go along with it. The last game I purchased was Doom 2 so its been a while. I'd like a first person shooter game that I can get a lot of fun out of without too much effort. I just want to spend a half hour every now and then making things go boom. The laptop is a 2ghz dual core, 3gb ram, and I think an Nvida video card with 256mb ram. I played Call Of Duty a few years ago and really enjoyed that. I'd prefer a game set in the present or historical past rather than a fantasy world. Any recommendations? -- modified at 3:17 Tuesday 16th October, 2007 Thanks to everyone who's replied :)
I know it's a couple of years old now, but Battlefield2 is the greatest shooter out there. I have tons of games, but I keep coming back to BF2. I've actually started to wear out the disk. Single player never gets old, but on-line is fun forever. They probably still have the free demo up for download, which never expires but limits you to one map. The demo allows on-line play too, and it's tough to get bored with that one map. I played it for months before I finally broke down and bought it.

Play Hitman - Blood Money[^]. From what you've asked in the post, and from your system configuration, this would be just perfect. The game just rocks. You play the role of an assassinator. [EDIT] Not to forget CounterStrike, but if only you plan on a LAN. Playing it with bots suck. [/EDIT]
Real men drive manual transmission.
Actually any of the Hitman series. Personally I loved 2 the best, but 3 and 4 were great too. To do them right you have to put some thought and work into the missions, but it's great fun to go around blasting everything that moves too.

Please don't. Stay the hell away from that game unless you want to spen hours of the day getting nothing done.
Yeah, watch Southpark's episode on it before you buy. Make Love Not Warcraft[^]

However for your spec I would recommend Quake 3 above them all, its old but still fast energetic and challenging for any player.
Are you insane??:wtf: When Quake 3 came out back in '99 it needed something like 300 MHz processor and an 8 MB Video Card to run! With your spec you can really go for almost everything there is out there.
Q3 would set off my board's heat sensors. After a couple minutes of playing it would start squealing really loud and throttle the processor. I had to mount three extra case fans with double sided foam tape all aiming at the processor to be able to play. I think it was an AMD I had, don't remember.

Well, all I can suggest at this moment are Bioshock, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars and the upcoming Call of Duty 4. Call of Duty has finally moved to a modern setting. Check out this demo level walkthrough: http://files.filefront.com/cod4mwwmv/;8791456;/fileinfo.html Damn, I didn't like the fixed paths through the Call of Duty games, but this one is the bomb!
Life would be so much easier if I had the source code!

I know you said you'd prefer a present/historical game rather than a fantasy world, but I'm going to mention Oblivion[^] anyway. :P If you push the graphics all the way up, it should give your machine a decent workout. And if you do what I did and use a bow with stealth, you can really get into the atmosphere of the game - creeping around corners, sniping Goblins in the back with poisoned arrows etc  If you ever played Diablo, you might also like Titan Quest[^]. It's basically Diablo in 3D with knobs on and set in mythological times of legend. Yea, I'm completely ignoring your stated game preferences - I just thought I'd mention things that I would play.

First game I bought for my PS3 in March, and still loving every second of it. My current character is a custom class (Shadow Mage) I'd originally created for Morrowind. Very stealth oriented, she has an insanely high Sneak skill. Her Marksman skill is high enough that she can zoom in on targets. My only complaint is I wish they'd included crossbows in the game... I'm surprised that no one has recommended "Return to Wolfenstein". It's a great WWII shooter with a bit of Doom thrown in for good measure. -Hawk

Seems to me I am also of the older generation - wants to play now and then. No-one has mentioned Duke Nukem. I have been a DoomII junkie once, but became a Duke fanatic - and there I stopped playing games - Quake was too much for me - too unreal. Other games such as Medal of Honour and Ghost Recon from Tom Clancy I also have enjoyed, but they did not have any AI in it as well. If you're dead and start the game from the beginning, the enemy always appear in the same spots. What about Half Life? Actually I prefer any Flight Simulation such as Jane's F-15, or the latest craze Orbiter[^], an excellent Space Simulation; try to blast off from Cape Canaveral and dock with the ISS - it's not that easy - very real - and you do not need a joystick with this one. Try to re-enter the atmosphere... and do a power-off landing at Cape Canaveral!

Definetely The Orange Box from Half-Life/Half-Life 2 developers Valve. Even though it is set in the near-future-alternate-reality (heh), it is basically in our time, with different weapons and more human and robot-like enemies than anything else, it is just amazing. The Orange Box is only $50 (£28 with tax, if you are British) and comes with Half Life 2 (The best game ever), Half Life 2: Episode 1 (the awesome sequel), Half Life 2: Episode 2 (The even better seqeul), Team Fortress 2 (Comic stylee, fun online multiplayer FPS, most anticipated online game for some time) and Portal (The joint best game in the pack (with hl2) and has an awesome twist at the end. Here is the orange box link: orange.half-life.com A review of the orange box by the best review out there: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/zeropunctuation/2541-Zero-Punctuation-The-Orange-Box I definetely recommend it!

I recommend "Return to Castle Wolfenstein" It's great fun. It does get rather fantastical on the later levels but it's truly superb anyway. The same goes for Half-life, though this is more disturbing in my opinion. If you think you're up to it, you might also want to puzzle out why the Mesa scientists "have to wear these ridiculous ties". Class.
