MSDN Documentation - Love it? Hate it?

Cool it! This isn't a survey being done here in the forums. Microsoft is conducting a survery though, here[^]. Take it out on them!

2006, 2007Thanks for that link. I hope it will be useful ? But, as a french I have a big problem with automatic translation from english to french on MSDN online. Often it's unreadable (pour ne pas dire tout simplement incompréhensible, inintelligible, illisible !). I have to type the number of the KB in its english version to get the original text in english which unfortunately makes me loose some time as I take about twice the time to read the same text in french. Can't they employ human translators ? OK, they already have a huge amount of texts to translate but if they never translate it correctly, I'm sorry to say that they don't fit my needs. What do you think about that "language barrier" (english or die) ?

2006, 2007Took the survey - felt good to vent - if anyone really reads it. You'll note that one (often) can access the documentation through the F1 (help) key. This is merely a ploy by MS to get IP rights on the Oxymoron: "Microsoft Help" But, by-and-large, when weighing the time spent vs. the value received, I find that the MSDN is somewhat worse than useless about half the time.

Done - maybe this will result in MSDN search actually being fixed. Ha! Who am I kidding!

Actually, it takes you to the MSDN ... just wait for about 30 mins for it load. -- modified at 11:37 Tuesday 16th October, 2007 This was actually a reply to Maximilien's post ... but the CP Worm Hole has obviously caused a shift in the threads once again, resulting in a distorted view of message reality. :~

2006, 2007I read the first sentence which states: "The purpose of this survey is to gather input on how and when Visual Studio content is used, how satisfied customers are with it, and where areas of improvement exist." Since "where areas of improvement exist" sounds like it was written by someone who does not speak English I'm not going to waste time on this.

2006, 2007I used to hate it, but ever since i got a better understanding of OOP, it is a lifesaver. I just hate the slow load time of the treeview on the left. It always takes about 5 seconds to initialize for each page request. Brian Burdan

2006, 2007Did the survey. Here's my response on the last item: In general, it's very often incomplete. I've been using VC++/MFC since version 1.5, and the documentation has been terrible; tasks that should take minutes have taken DAYS OR WEEKS, in a large part because of the incomplete and sometimes incoherent documentation. It's so bad people make jokes about it. Since the web, it's gotten better because developers no longer have to rely solely on MS documentation. It doesn't seem to be getting better; in fact the opposite is true. With Visual Studio 6, help comes up almost instantly. With the current version, there's a wait while content is accessed over the Internet. The results appear to be returned in random order. Why can't the most relevant items appear first, like Google does? Now we find out the samples will be separated from the reference material in the next version. Also the documentation wastes developer time by not telling what DOESN'T work. A few examples: When doing ODBC work for the first time, the documentation led me to believe primary keys/foreign keys were supported, and I spent a few days writing a solution based on that impression. They weren't, and all that time was wasted. This year, the documentation led me to believe .NET supported the CMYK color space. (And the documentation for that area was particularly fragmented and incoherent. I had to print out dozens of topics and spend hours dissecting sentences to even START to get an understanding of how to use it). Bottom line: CMYK was NOT supported, and Microsoft wasted my time.

As my collegue suggested, there should be Bill/Steve animated character guiding us throught MSDN
I would suggest the Office Assistant Character set be introduced again. That way, the preferred Animated Character can be chosen by the user itself to manage through the MSDN ocean with ease. Abolishing them ^ from the face of Office 2007 is a sign of diehard cruelty.

I'd welcome the office assistant characters - if there was a way I could watch them die a gruesome animated death when I switch them off (Oh - and give me choices about how to kill them, too). Sorry, but when I'm at work (or at play on my PC) I don't need cutesy animations pulling my attention away from the task at hand. In fact, I'm just not into cutesy, whenever or wherever. Sorry to those of you who love it, but I don't. X|

Totally with you. MSDN was, is (and have little hope for the future), just not usable or digestibale at all...even by a veteran amateur like me... BUT, unless you are a board pensioner, or do not have a job, with loads of time to read a load of incoherent, not applicable, and seriously bordering on corporate marketing style bla bla (no content, just useless techno c..p), to realize that either they also have no idea what the document but do t because it is a requirement, or we are definately using the wrong system to find solutions to our engineering questions. Goolge, developemnt comunities and forums RULES ...thanks CodeProject, and thanks to the developers that share their experiences, tips, ideas and findings. :-O:cool: Zeeker

2006, 2007I loved MSDN back in the Visual Studio 6.0 days. I didn't have an Internet Connection back then, but the organization, the overall quality of the information, and primarily, the quality of the sample code was often more than enough. Back then instead of silly snippets of code showing no more than the calling syntax, several really useful examples were provided. I often focused first on the example than on the explanation. One precious gem that sadly was removed in later renditons of MSDN was "Hardcore Visual Basic". I was a C++/Delphi programmer reluctantly forced to code in VB6. :wtf: It surely was fun unlocking "the power" and begin using lower level stuff such as pointers, memory allocation, threading, etc. One thing I'm certainly not proud of (in retrospective) is that parts of my VB code usually were totally indigestible for the rest of the team, which was the primary reason why I was forced to use Visual Basic in the first place. Shame on me... :~ Ger
An interesting form of object-oriented programming: You suggest a novel algorithm, and watch as the rest of your team objects! ;)
