India and elephants

One of the side effects of being in one of the most developed nations in the world is that it's extremely easy to avoid seeing anything outside of it. Hell, I think the majority of people hardly ever think about anything outside of their daily routine. I know a lot of people that have rarely ever left their little home town. Most have never been outside of the US. So a lot of people only get exposure to other cultures through the silliness of Hollywood. Which is pretty sad because that's usually grossly inaccurate. But it's not just the US, I know for a fact that there are people in Japan that think Texas is still full of cowboys with six shooters strapped to their sides using the outhouse between roping cattle and dodging the sheriff's bullets. Not many mind you, but it happens. So a lot of American's think of elephants and curry when you mention India, or monkey brains (from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom). And samurai, ninja and kimono from Japan. And AK47s and oil from the entire middle east. It doesn't help that our education includes virtually nothing international. Unless you count spanish lessons in Texas schools where 50% of the class is Mexican anyway.

There are people in the USA still worried about New Mexico when they enter Indian country.... If I had a dollar for every time I was asked about the dangers of Indians.... I could actually afford a vacation to visit where I was born (Germany). :) -- modified at 13:28 Monday 22nd October, 2007

That is funny. There are some strange differences between people that never leave big cities and people that never go there. You just have to expect to have wierd preconceived notions about someplace you've never been.

Yeah, I try not to have preconceived notions of Germany. I would like to see where I was born once before I die, but then I would love to visit everywhere once before I die and the latter is far less likely. :) The pictures of the city where I was born look inviting, but I figure there is an even chance they deliberately made them look that way. :) I chuckle at advertisements for locations here, and then sometimes I am even involved. I was involved in making a picture using satellites to advertise a certain region of New Mexico. When I used raw satellite images, I was told the lakes/rivers were too murkey and uninviting and the land was too brown. So I adjusted the color bands to make the landscape an inviting green and hand-painted the lakes (and a color swapped the rivers) to a beautiful bright swimming pool blue. :laugh: Anyone who believes those images, obviously never read the litterature and only looked at the pictures.

First of all a :wtf: (WTF smiley), now i am here in US for the first time, i have been here for 1 week and all i hear is: were you scrubbing elephant? do you have an elephant pet? how are the elephants in india? I am 32 years old and the only elephant i ever saw was in a zoo so what is this obsession and for the last time WE DONT EAT MONKEY BRAINS and stuff like that half the population here is vegetarian including me. And one more thing: WE DO NOT WORSHIP COWS, Cows are domestic animals here they are like dogs in US you dont eat dogs do you, so similarly we dont like to eat cows THATS IT. and dont even get me starting on the snake thing :rolleyes:. But all in all i like US, people are generally nice :-D

Silly people. You'll be happy to know that most of us are not so misinformed. It's the Malaysians who eat monkey brains; Indians eat super-hot curries for breakfast, dinner, and supper, washing it all down with spiced tea. :rolleyes:

I am 32 years old and the only elephant i ever saw was in a zoo so what is this obsession and for the last time WE DONT EAT MONKEY BRAINS and stuff like that half the population here is vegetarian including me. And one more thing: WE DO NOT WORSHIP COWS, Cows are domestic animals here they are like dogs in US you dont eat dogs do you, so similarly we dont like to eat cows THATS IT. and dont even get me starting on the snake thing :rolleyes:. But all in all i like US, people are generally nice :-D

Well, the first and only time I went to India, the first thing we saw when waking up in the morning was an elephant walking (I think it was "handled" by someone, and was told that it was the way for temples to get money) down the street and a cow nearby.

People in the US are just as dumb about other regions in the US. I once convinced someone that car insurance was way more expensive in South Dakota because of all the roaming bison. She thought the Indians (feather not dot) still lived in teepees.
