Fires in Southern California

SoCal is ablaze again. Some of you may remember the 2003 Cedar Fire[^]. The wind conditions here are worse than they were then. A bunch of my friends have been evacuated from their homes. I'm farther south than the fire is right now, but that's no guarantee, as these fires have been jumping 8 lane freeways. The one plus here is that my classes were called off today. Thought I'd let you guys know, just in case you have friends or family here and haven't heard it on the news.

You bet I remember it. We lived in San Diego then, and the whole city was covered with smoke. I hope everything ends well now.

If you know what you are looking at on the satellite photos, you realize they are pretty bad. I have rarely seen smoke trails that long before. Knowing that, it must be pretty bad on the ground.

You bet I remember it. We lived in San Diego then, and the whole city was covered with smoke. I hope everything ends well now.
The air outside is almost as bad as it was then. There are still blue spots (Qualcomm stadium is one of them, which is where they're evac-ing a bunch of people.), but you look outside and a lot of it is just brown. Thick and brown.

Yeah. The only reason I said that it looks worse is because those pics are from yesterday. And it was bad yesterday...but it got a lot worse last night.

Yeah, this looks like it could be bad. I'm originally from the Midwest and thought tornadoes were bad. These fires are scary stuff! My company is shut down today. Lots of people live in North County. Now there's a real reason to stay away from Witch Creek!

I no longer recall what the incident was called, but the last time I remember smoke trails that long was about 14 years ago when I was 11 or 12. I remember walking to school and the sky was blood red for 3 days from the smoke from the fires - 100 miles away. Those Santa-Ana winds are killer..

You laugh, but have you ever flown into or out of LA at night? One of the only areas in the country where you can fly for literally 30-45 minutes and never see a dark patch on the ground.

The Santiago Canyon fire is about 1 mile from where I work. We were told to go home Monday because the air system was sucking too much smoke into our building. Not sure if we are going to stay Tuesday or not yet - they said they would send us an e-mail, but those of us who get into work at 6:00 AM are waiting to find out ... :~ We have a good view from the second floor windows out of the building.
