If you want longevity then the PS3 is the one to go for. I believe like the PS2, it will eventually come out on top due to the types of titles being released for it however the hash that Sony made of the pricing and the launch hasn't helped. Xbox360 will always seem like a half hearted console and I don't think it will shake this fact off for a while. The Wii is great initially but you have to wonder if Nintendo will simply stop supporting it or suffocate the game titles like they did with their earlier (and somewhat superior consoles). I currently own a PS2, PS3 and a Dreamcast, mainly down to the fact that the games I own can only be played on that particular console. The console market is much more competitive this time round with some very good titles on Xbox360 as well as the Wii (Legend of Zelda etc) so its very difficult to choose. If I had the money, I would get all three!

Funny, having a very similar discussion with other pals on a different board. I'd go for the Wii, simply because I have a PC for when I want to play "serious" games. I personally hate FPS on a console, it's kb/mouse or nothing in my opinion. I don't like that all online play is through XBox Live, which I'm not willing to pay for. And honestly, there's maybe 3 titles on the 360 that I can't play on my PC. I'll live. :) PS3 I won't touch until the world makes up its mind on if it's going Blu-Ray or HDDVD. Not paying $500 when half of the cost could very well be a next gen Betamax next year.

I purchased a Wii for the family. GREAT family console. My 4 year old can even play with it. It is also the complete party package. When we have people over the Wii gets slammed with action. I do not think you can find a better drinking game personally.. hehe :D However if it was just me, I would prefer something like a PS3 or XBox360 because the games are better (more adult driven consoles). So if it's for you only, get the PS3. If it's for the family, definitely get the Wii. Me personally I game on the PC (online man myself).

I've had the PS3 for almost 10 months now. I can't say enough great things about it. I have around 7 games and 5 blueray movies. I play it on a Sony 50 inch HD LCD tv. It's awesome! It also plays normal DVD's and really improves the picture quality. I really like the free downloads of demo games. The bluetooth wireless internet connaction is great too. If you want HD go with the PS3. I haven't mastered any of the games yet so there's always something to play. I really enjoy playing Madden 07 on-line against other people. If you both have a headset you can talk to each other while your playing which really makes playing on-line much more enjoyable. I use a bluetooth headset. It took me a little bit to figure out I had to connected to it before I start the game. I've been completely satisfied with me PS3. If you have the money get the PS# with a HD LCD tv and make sure you have highspeed internet. Best Wishes on your decision. :cool: T-Dog.

The Wii does have an internal hard drive. The Wii can play online with others as well. Not that I need to play with people online (there are 6 people in my house).:laugh: I have a Wii, PS2 and GameCube and I really like the Wii. I refuse to pay $600 for a PS3. All of the additional features are not worth the extra cash. I have a computer and a DVD player for most of the PS3 functions.

Last week ...or the week before Sony annouced a future update to all versions of the PS3 dropping compatibility for the PS2.....This feature will disappear shortly.

I can't imagine why they would want to consider dropping PS2 compatibility. If anything, I'd consider that as one of the primary reasons to go with a PS3 over other consoles. The gaming catalog for PS3 (through PS1 & PS2 compatibility) far exceeds any of the other consoles. I'd really be interested in reading the article you noted if still know where you found it. Thanks!

Buyer beware though. They are making cheaper versions of the consoles without all the bells and whistles. You need to read the packaging to ensure you are getting what you want. For instance the Wii is coming out with a console that does NOT support the previous consoles' games. You can only play Wii games. I agree with the other posts, i.e. "It depends on what games you want to play". Pick out your games first and then buy the console that they all run on. If you don't know the games you'll play, then there was another post about the "seriousness" of gaming. Simple pick up and play games are on the Wii, Xbox in the middle to upper "you have to read a manual in order to play", and the PS3 is a serious "you have to TRAIN yourself" to use the game. Especially the First person shooters. I have to say the Xbox Halo serious is cool. My nephew has one. Online gaming with first person go Xbox and PS3.

I think it depends on the games you are interested in playing. It's my understanding that the PS3 is for the more serious gamer, were as the Wii is geared towards family entertainment. If it were my decision, I would get a Wii ... If I play games anymore, I want my games to be simple and fun, not a full-time job. My 2c.

I have had both a Wii and 60 gig PS3 since shortly after their launches, and while the Wii was a blast to play at first it's charm fades fast. The Wii is still pretty fun when you have a group of people around to play with, but once you and your friends are sick of 3-4 decent party games for the system you'll be left with an expensive NES/SNES/Genesis emulator that your wife will use more than you. Or at least that's how my time with a Wii has turned out. The PS3 on the other hand is fun to play with or without friends, but it's also suffering from a lack of really good games. But if you're like me and really only play games 5 - 10 hours a week those several games that are really good will probably hold you over until some of the bigger titles begin to come out for the system. And there's always all of the great PSOne/2 games you can play as well. Both systems are good, and both systems will be getting better, but they are targeted at completely different groups of people.

I have owned a Wii for almost a year now. Havent played much on the PS3 so I cannot give a comparison, but I can tell you that I have enjoyed the Wii a lot. It has better than average graphics but it more than makes up for any lackings in the visual department with its unique playstyle. If you stick to games created by Nintendo you cant go wrong. Unfortunately some of the other game companies rushed out to make below average Wii games only to have something on the market. Games like Zelda, Metroid, Res Evil 4 and Madden were all very well done. You wont be disappointed with a Wii.

We have a PS2, which works great on the SDTV in the kids playroom. The only games I have seen hyped for the PS3 look way too violent for my grade school kids. The Wii has many very family-friendly games which my kids absolutely love... and Wii looks good on the SDTV Then there is the whole isswue of Sony and their corporate ethics. Does anyone remember the root-kit fiasco? How about Sony's involvement with the RIAA? This is the same Sony who gave us Betamax tapes when the world wanted VHS, Memory Sticks when we all wanted USB, and now the whole Blue-Ray scheme. For all these reasons, I will NEVER buy another Sony product.

For me (the wife actually) it's all about Zelda. If Zelda was on a different platform then I'd be buying that system. They managed to upgrade Mario and keep it interesting also. DigitalRacer

I was thinking the same thing. I picked up a 360 about 3 months ago. I think it is great. After getting over my wow addiction, 360 is a lot of fun. I've been over to friends houses to play PS3 and Wii, but I still think 360 is the way to go for most gamers. Good rounded selection of games on a pretty powerful console. The Wii is a good console for hanging out with friends, I'll admit I'd like to have the Wii also just to play Zelda and Metroid. To me it's really a choice between Wii and Xbox360. It ultimately comes down to the games you want to play. PS3 just doesn't have the game options yet.

Another correction - presuming you mean 'Doesn't work as well as the Wii with SDTV' - the PS3 is fine with SDTV - it just doesn't look as good as on HDTV. I've currently got my PS3 hooked up to an ancient CRT TV (pre-DVD!) and it is fine. Of course, when I upgrade to a nice HD screen, it'll be even better ;P!
I haven't tried mine at SD (though it's certainly possible to set within the system). Mine is currently set to 1080i (the best my TV supports) and most of my games run at 720p. I think Harry Potter runs at 1080i, but I'm not entirely certain -- I'll have to check the packaging again. I don't think I've heard of any of the early PS3 games suffering from "SD syndrome" -- a condition where playing a game in SD results in a picture that is nigh unplayable. A few early XBox 360 game had that problem (Dead Rising comes to mind). Flynn

Still, €400 euro is a lot of money for a games machine. Still, I am glad they have a cheaper option that isn't crippled.
