Second MacBook or MacBook Pro and I'd stick with Windows XP. Vista works fine on the MacBook Pro but it is an annoying operating system at this stage. Windows XP still works fine.

What are you comparing it too? When I bought my MacBook Pro here in Ireland it was roughly €300 more than the equivalent Dell. It is a better machine so I thought it was worth the premium.

I am Planning to buy a laptop. Which one do you prefer ? My choices are Dell, Compaq, Acer and HP. And what about OS ? Is vista better than XP ?

My company ordered a new Dell Precision for me back in July. It still hasn't shipped because Dell have some serious problems in sourcing the 17" screen. Not happy.

I will get a Dell Inspiron 1501 later this week. The price is very good. Specifications: AMD Turion X2 1800 MHZ, 2 GB RAM, 120 GB HDD and the best of all, it's got 3 year warranty by default(all the others brands only have 1). Also it comes without any bundled OS and it has available drivers for Vista and XP! I can hardly wait for it!

The Mac would be a great choice, as it's basically two computers, except that it costs as much as two computers.

Christian Graus - Microsoft MVP - C++ "I am working on a project that will convert a FORTRAN code to corresponding C++ code.I am not aware of FORTRAN syntax" ( spotted in the C++/CLI forum )

Really? When we priced it against the equivalent Dell it wasn't twice as expensive. You can get very cheap Dell laptops but they are pretty horrendous. Had a brief look at other brands too and didn't see a "twice as much" difference.

FWIW, I just bought a Dell Vostro 1500. Intel Core2 Duo, 2GB RAM, 15" widescreen display, 160GB HD, CD/DVD burner (does all formats except DVD-RAM), nVidia video chipset, WiFi, and XP Pro SP2. It's a sweet little machine, much better than my ancient IBM ThinkPad with a Celeron 366, 64MB, and Win98. :) The Vostro can come with XP or Vista, your choice, and drivers are available for both. XP availability was very important, as as I plan on skipping Vista entirely and wait for Windows 7 (or whatever it will finally be called). Unless you absolutely need the latest and greatest, my recommendation is to stick with tried-and-true XP for as long as possible. Let others cut themselves on the bleeding edge. :)

One question, do your choices include home built? I have been happy with the one I put together. You pick your shell, processor, hard drive, ram, and occasionally wireless card (I wanted bluetooth so I had to pay for that extra). Then drop in your OS of choice, if you have a non-OEM XP disk that you only use on your desktop you can put it on your laptop as well. Then load up everything else you need. Granted this eliminates the "Help my computer is acting funny!" tech support and only gives you "Help, this is broken please replace it" support per part. But if you are comfortable with that, I would check that out as well.

I'm a big fan of Dell. Whatever brand you buy, make sure you get a laptop with a 7200 (not 5400) rpm drive. /ravi
