What else would you be doing for a living?

For those of you that make your living writing software: Let's say that for whatever reason you never became a professional software developer, what do you think you would you be doing for a living? I think I would probably have been a chef but there is a slight possibility I might have been a commercial artist or an actor.

Book store owner. At least, this is what I hope to be doing in a few years. :)
Dad always thought laughter was the best medicine, which I guess is why several of us died of tuberculosis. I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they'd never expect it.

I would of loved to get into acting too, as it was something I did a lot of in my teens. Other than computing, my best subjects at school were geography, maths and physics, so some sort of science job would also of been possible. I quite fancied the idea of civil engineering too - the idea of helping to build infrastructure such as roads, bridges, etc. always appealed to me.

Serously ? At one time, I thought child care. Now, I'd have to say that I'd go back to my first love, as a child I always wanted to be an archaeologist ( even before Indiana Jones made it cool ).

Building engines/restoring classic british sports cars, especially Lotus/Jensen/Jaguar. Found recently that I am REALLY missing it. Ho-hum.

Still don't know what I want to do when I leave school and that was nearly 30 years ago. In the meantime I'll slap out some code now and again and hope it works sufficiently well to pay me enough to maintain my standard of living. Apart from that, probably a geologist studying tectonic plates - I love 'em.
I still remember having to write your own code in FORTRAN rather than be a cut and paste merchant being pampered by colour coded Intellisense - ahh proper programming - those were the days :)

I would have, and should have, been a lawyer. I'm still trying to get a law degree now, at 38.

An artist, graphic designer, writer, pro photographer, musician, counselor, consumer product designer, film-writer, landscape or home designer, tutor, electronics engineer, or ecologist. Gosh, it's so hard to choose... I have too many interests! Fortunately, I'm not only limited to one profession, and in software development I also do get to pursue my writing (albeit tech only) and graphics design interests to a fair degree.

Well since I also have a biochemistry degree I guess I would be a chemist/biochemist. Now and then when I get tired of all the inanimate bits I do long for the lab.
