My brother is a first year Mechatronics (Mechanical & Electronics) Engineering student and he has a few C (and C++) courses and he's asked me for some good book suggestions. I loaned him Herbert Schildt's C Complete reference. Any others?

Stephen Kochan's Programming in C (3rd Edition) is also a great book. It proved to be extremely useful (at least to me).

For reference use, I recommend K&R and also C: A Reference Manual.

                      Best wishes, Hans
