I often complain about the Chatty Cathy's I work. Encountering the CC's in the non-work world is usually not as bad because you can move. However, I went to my chiropractor and decided to get a massage. The therapist would not shut up the entire time. She asked me how to make Taverns (referred to as Sloppy Joes in some areas). I'm here to relax, lady. So a couple questions... Has this happened to you before (stuck in a situation with a CC and can't easily leave)? What is a polite way to say, "Shut up?" Do any of you have TMJ? If so what have you found for relief? The chiropractor isn't helping much.
My girlfriend suffers with TMJ; she has a mouthguard & has regular massage therapy sessions which have generally kept the pain under control. However she has recently starting with acupuncture & this has been the most successful treatment yet, she will often go for days after completely pain-free. Day to day she swims & has said this also helps. The common thread with all these being to relax the muscle tensions in the head, neck, shoulders & back. As for the other, I would try grunting unresponsively or just ignoring the chatter with an "oh I'm sorry I missed that" if necessary. They'll soon get the message.

Just lay a big ol' nasty fart on her. She won't say anything....

Same here. Rice Dream[^] ice cream is a pretty good substitute.

Ask Chatty if she heard the Mark Levin show last night. Start talking about your political views... guarenteed to clear any room.

I was a clencher until I went cold turkey on caffeine. I no longer clench.

What is TMJ ? I work from home, isolated from the outside world. When I go to physio, I look forward to having a conversation.

I had a guy I worked with that was his own punishment. It was a summer job while in highschool, packaging triple mix (manure, soil, lime). The guy whouldn't shutup, and always had a mouthful of the "sh**" literally  It was a challenge not to laugh, but keeping my mouth closed was its own insentive.

Ouch, yeah me too. I only discovered it recently. I've been feeling sick most of my life because I didn't know about it. They used to force me to drink milk in school and I would always resist, but never knew why. Anyway, there are a lot of soy products now that are much better than they used to be. Here's the stuff I really like: http://www.tastethedream.com/[^] I can't really help you with your original question though. I am one of the chatty people... I can't help it. It is something I have to do... but I do have a good sense of when it's annoying the other person and they really don't want to talk.

This only works if they don't already know you, but learn enough sign language to fake it. Then pretend to be deaf. It's helped me in the line at the store a couple of times. You do, however, run the risk that they'll start signing back.

 Personally I find just pretending the person flapping his or her gums at me doesn't exist works well enough in a public place.
