So, I've seen very little of my sidebar, because there are simply no gadgets that promise to do very much for me. Do you have any worthwhile gadgets to share with the rest of us?

Nope. I've turned off my sidebar. Pretty much the first thing I did. Marc

At work we have the daily canteen menu available as a sidebar gadget. (And, strangely, as an RSS feed) Mighty useful...

I literally forgot there is a sidebar. That's the first thing I disabled.

My backscratcher is quite nice. Oh - you didn't want to know about that type of gadget.
Deja View - the feeling that you've seen this post before.

Every now and then I'll take a stroll through the available gadgets and try one out, only to find it doesn't do quite what I want, so I uninstall it. I'll repeat this process every month or so... At the moment, I have 2 of the standard weather gadgets (one for England, one for California) and they only appear to be updated about once every 24 hours or something equally useless. I also have an IP address thingy, which shows my current LAN and WAN address. Unfortunately, it's too stupid to realize that I have multiple NIC's in the machine, so the LAN address part (which is what I really wanted it for) is also virtually useless. Finally, I have an amusing Terror Alert[^] status icon, which I keep on there purely for entertainment value. In all the time I've had it (over 6 months now) it has never changed from "Elevated", so either the terror alert chart system is worthless, or the gadget is broken. Either way, it too is useless. I keep thinking I ought to write a gadget, but for the life of me I can't think of anything that would actually be useful - and so far, it seems that no-one else can either...

I've gone through my share of gadgets, but so far have currently settled on five: System Control, which is just flat-out nice to have; Multi-Meter, so I can tell how much memory Visual Studio 2005 has eaten up; Network Traffic, to keep an eye on our bandwidth-hungry application and smash it back into obedience when it goes too far; Digital World Clock, because I need to know what time it is in Malaysia when I'm performing updates on their end (link goes to Sidebar Gadget Gallery), and; App Launcher v3, to make it so I don't have to hit the Run menu to load the Character Map, among other things. I'll probably get more as they come up, but I don't spend too much time looking. -- modified at 12:49 Friday 9th November, 2007

When I have the sidebar enabled I have:
- Multimeter - Useful for showing how much RAM is being eaten up, for some reason when I close Outlook now it remains open, which is useful but occassionally I want the free RAM
- Presto's Hard Drive Monitor - Had a use when I was running out of space but now it just makes my sidebar look fuller
- Clock - sometimes nice to see an analogue clock
- Calendar - Nice to see the date without having to move the mouse
- BBC Radio Player - Occassionally go through moods where I'll listen to the World Service continuously
- BBC News 24 - Video of News 24 but just use it for the sound rather than the video which is tiny
Lately though I've had the sidebar turned off because I've been remote desktopping in from workstations with smaller resolutions and it takes up too much space. On my 22" widescreen for most things now that I've cut down on the programming I do it's fine.
