Late last night I was designing one of my wife's anniversery presents(a custom yahtzee game) and I deleted a few files from my desktop. They were to empty XML files, and I am very sure those 2 were all that I deleted. It deleted those 2 files, but then I got the error you get when you try to delete a file that it is use. The error message read "Cannot Delete WINDOWS. File is currently in use." When I saw this I about pooped my pants. I became very frantic. I thought that I had gotten a virus or something somehow. I then proceeded to check my anti virus software for any detected virii. I made sure the def file was the latest, and did a scan on my system. The scan finished while I was sleeping, and there wasn't a single detected virus. Also, Ad-Aware didn't detect anything troublesome. I am now scared to reboot my laptop for fear that some files didn't get deleted, and my system will be hosed. Has anyone ever seen anything like this?

No, I haven't seen anything like that. Only thing bugging me right now is the occasional blue stop screen my desktop machine throws at me from time to time.

I have encountered a similar issue with the Windows recycle bin in Windows XP. On different occasions in the past on different installations, I have placed an item in the recycle bin and chosen to empty it. Afterward, the recycle bin icon would not change to an empty one like it should. Upon right-clicking, I would still have the Empty Recycle Bin option. Choosing it would bring up the prompt, "Are you sure you want to delete 'WINDOWS'?" On one occasion, I figured, I would answer Yes. :) Needless to say it wouldn't perform that operation. In Windows Vista, I have had the Recycle Bin icon completely disappear after emptying it leaving the icon's title "Recycle Bin" still on the desktop. Weird stuff.

So, do you think it's safe to shut down my computer? I am pretty scared to do it at this point :~

I've had this happen before. I'm not sure what causes it, but somehow the recycle bin thinks system directories have been put in the recycler. Usually a restart makes the problem go away.

I figured that would make it go away. Whether it be by cleaning up the problem, or hosing my machine due to the lack of system files :p Do you think it is safe to restart? I don't want to hose my machine :)

Should be fine. The folder's not actually there, it's something broken in the way the recycler references things. Don't hold me to that though :P I'm not responsible if it dies! ;P

As all the others have said, this kind of thing can happen... yesterday I spent all the day in my office solving a problem in the Red Hat Enterprise Linux server we have. It was a stupid problem caused because the software that works like Windows Update in the Red Hat become mad... If it is possible, copy all the important files inside another computer, memory media... and then restart the computer, surely it will be safe to do it, but if you do that step you'll be safe even if you must reinstall everything. Good luck! :rose:

Seen it many times. Go and delete any other file then empty the recycle bin: that usually does it. And no, you won't be deleting the Windows folder. You may have to reboot to clear it completely but it really isn't anything other than windows being windows.

I believe so, yes. I haven't had any problems with shutting my computers down when this happened.
