Zune and Customer relations a la Microsoft

Go away[^] You'd think that a company battling to take on the biggest consumer electronics wave since the pocket calculator would have a bit more of a clue when it comes to promoting good will amongst hopeful customers. Fine, I'll stick with my iPod. At least it's not brown.

Hey Chris. You don't get to get into their website. It's ACCESS DENIED! Holy crap that's the most user-unfriendly version of "We don't support services for this product in your country yet" that I've ever seen.

I just installed the new Zune software update. Oh. My. Gawd. Ugliest piece of trash I've seen in recent memory. Oh and it's also resyncing MY WHOLE COLLECTION. :sigh: Watch, now I'll have two copies of everything on the device once this is all over. EDIT: Don't look at these screenshots. You've been warned. #1 #2 My feelings about the Zune are even stronger than before. Love the hardware. HATE THE SOFTWARE.

I installed the new software last night as soon as I got home... first impressions are that I like the device UI updates, good job there!, not sure about the desktop software yet... I like the fact that it picked up all my Media PC recordings, and has a nice videos area (did a quick sysnc of a South Park episode :)), so that's cool... seems a bit sluggish when displaying album art, but I chalked that up to maybe it was still discovering things. Also, it seemed to be mixing up a lot of my albums with other albums, so this could potentially not be good... it was displaying the wrong album art, and tracks for certain albums. I'll give it today to sync itself up, possibly, so it might be better tonight. I see they added an area for downloading Podcasts too, so it looks like they actually made it a lot easier to manage your video content in this version. I never had any video or podcasts on my device, because it seemed like it didn't support it previously, or you had to jump through hoops to get it to recognize it (a bit of laziness on my part, but I really like that it makes it easy in the new version!!! I'll actually start syncing my recorded shows and others now :)) Ok, so I'm definitely going to need an 80 gig model for video!!
Happy programming!

Did the zune upgrade last night....the software page looks like someone threw up on my screen...sheez at least give us a "blank" skin or something. It looks like some little kid came up with the color and design scheme. On the technical side....one thing that might be cool is you can program the Zune to find and communicate with your wireless network...you can leave the thing in your car and still sync with it. In case you can't walk the 40 feet to your car and back...joking aside, that's pretty neat. Do you all turn off the privacy stuff like the innocent sounding "help microsoft provide a better customer experience by sharing usage and program data." NOOOOO!!!!! FRIGGIN THANK YOU!! "Hello Mr. Smith.... we noticed you listened to Ted Nugent Last night...here's your free trial subscription to "How to build a compound and militia" magazine. Also, look in your services that are running, what is the "Zune bus..." service? Zone alarm told me that the Zune Bus(I can't remember the whole name), wanted to accept connections from the internet....NO NO NO Are they installing some sort of little server? Of course since i'ts microsoft there will be NO security problems with that...

I love it when software developers criticize UIs created by professional designers. Probably every computer-illiterate person you know would prefer the sorts of screens you linked to. When (normal) people plug hardware into a computer, they're usually ready to face some sort of programmer-design UI that has a whole bunch of widgets and grids that force them to learn new metaphors for interacting with their device. The Zune interface tries to make it *appear* as friendly to put new content on your Zune as it is to play content on the Zune itself.
