Many reasons... My boss, who was ever one of my best friends, flouted me for I don't have a master degree. This job has taken all of my off-duty time away. Have to work also on saturday and sundays, and everyday have to work till midnight. All left is only time for sleep when I home. They discourage me from adopting new programming techniques. They don't want me to code using too difficult syntax because if I do, they won't be able to read my code. But since they lack knowledge of syntax, why wouldn't they study hard? The atmosphere in this company is getting more and more gloomy... Some people were fired, and more and more people resigned... This company has been always fooled around by the customer company. Those managers knew that already, but they still are contented to be fooled... Anyway, I am going to get a PhD. And then find a new job. Maxwell Chen Lets make bugs better!

Hey good luck with your future. I think you took a right decision and everything will turn out to be good for you. There is no point working somewhere where you are tense or not happy. I have never wasted time worrying about such insignificant things. Keep your eye upon the donut and NOT upon the hole. - Bill Sergio about posting in the right forum. The Lounge - June 23, 2002

I thought I'd start using my real name here on CP. After all this is not IRC, huh? It's a serious place where programmers meet. As for the fewer posts I thought it's time to move over for the young ones like Brian Delahunty, Mazy, Matt Newman and Rama :-) Nish

How are you going to get a 'Ph.D.' if you don't have a Master's? You said your boss flouted you because you didn't have a Master's Degree. ================== I agree with you on what you did. I disagree with the timing!! IOW, you had the element of surprise on your side because you knew what you were going to do; they didn't. You lost that element by not having that next step ready and prepared, waiting for you (whether that be another job, or accepted by a college or university to continue with your academic pursuits). Unless you have already been accepted by a college or university to continue with your education, it might not be easy as you think, because I had a friend who taught High School for about 5 years, and when he applied to four different universities to enter their Master's program, they all turned him down on various reasons. The most common one however, was that had been away from the subject too long that he wanted to pursue. My friend had two choices, either apply at one of the lesser known campuses (and hoped one might accept him), or start re-applying himself to the subject he wanted to obtain his Master Degree in. ITM, he still had to work to support himself. Those are the preparations to which I indicated the element of surprise could have worked in your favor. William

Don't put yourself through a PhD because someone slighted you. Do it if you want to or you won't enjoy it. Doesn't sound like you need a job! Why not set something up yourself whilst you are studying - why make money for someone else. Alice thought that running very fast for a long time would get you to somewhere else. " A very slow kind of country!" said the queen. "Now, here , you see, it takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place".

Maxwell Chen wrote: I am going to get a PhD. Good luck with your PhD! The question is: how long do you expect it will take you? Here in Spain, we need at least 4 years. Mine took me about 5 years and a half.
