Ah, but since we're being hypothetical here, the question remains unasked. What would you do if there were only objectionable programming work available, paying what you're accustomed to making, but all other types of work on the job market meant substandard wages and a questionable attempt to support your family, forcing you to bring up your children in a band and violent neighborhood, causing financial hardship, the inability to afford proper medical care for your wife & kids, etc. Weighted against the dangers and hardships that you could present to the ones you love, which is worse - worrying that your children will be attacked by gangs, or coding annoying pop up ads for a silly camera? Contrived example, you say? You betcha. But then, your initial question is hypothetical as well, so it seems fair game. ;P Chistopher Duncan Author - The Career Programmer: Guerilla Tactics for an Imperfect World (Apress)

My perception from my last post about the adult DVD is that most people would take that job. Would you be involved in Spam or X-10 pop-up ads too? What are the limits to your dignity and respectability? I know I wouldn't take the adult DVDs or X-10 cameras on moral and business principles.

If you've lived the impoverished lifestyle, then you have a right to an opinion in this regard. Now here's the thing (looks over both shoulders to make sure no one is listening), and you've gotta keep it quiet... :suss: I'm a rock & roll musician, and I truly love sex with pretty girls. However, I suffer from an incurable disease. I'm a romantic and an idealist. If there's no love, no emotion, no connection, then no matter how pretty the girl, I'd rather sleep alone. I detest strippers and the like. Not because I think there's anything morally wrong with sex or nudity. Rather, because stripping is all about scams, getting something for nothing, i.e. emptying a man's pockets, giving nothing in return, and laughing about it afterwards. (I'm a musician - I've known a few strippers). Hookers are more honest in this regard. Work in the porn business? It's not for me. But not because I'm opposed to sex, or people watching people have sex. I see nothing wrong with either. Rather, I just know the type of creatures that frequent that scene, and it's not the kind of people I care to hang out with, for completely non sex/nudity reasons. However, faced with going back to giving plasma twice a week for $10 a pop at the local blood bank and sleeping on the floor of a friend's living room, I'd learn the ins and outs (no pun intended) of video & graphics programming so fast it would make your head spin. But then, I have no ethical problem with what they do, I just don't like the people. I'd tolerate them, however, if it was a temporary matter of survival. Without hesitation. We do all have our boundaries, though. Would I rob, assault or kill people for a cheeseburger? Not unless society fell into complete anarchy. Or unless they happened to be in Marketing... Maybe I'd work for a company that employed a postal worker. As to the others I'd have to consider them on there merits. For instance if a company is going to stoop to spamming what other activities would they find appropriate to be involved in. The same with the Porn Star, Is this the kind of person I want to be aquainted with and select for company ? Whilst I have had to pay lawyers in the past, I still hate them all. My opinion is similar "I dislike the people" more than what I dislike "what they actually do". The same people who are prepared to indulge in one activity are likely to engage in even more distasteful activities. I also have worked in a few forms of the "Entertainment" Industry and remember colleagues who would take advantage of others. Regardz Colin J Davies

If I were going to end up hungry and homeless if I didn't take the job, I'd take it in a heartbeat. Gotta look out for numero uno first. OTOH if I had a choice, and wouldn't end up homeless without a job right away, pr0n/X10 would be off the list. --Mike-- Just released - RightClick-Encrypt - Adds fast & easy file encryption to Explorer My really out-of-date homepage Sonork-100.19012 Acid_Helm

I went to this EastBay works orientation just to see what types of classes they had to offer. During the tour the lady said we could use the computer for whatever as long as we didn't visit any pornographic websites. I played the devil's advocate and asked what if we needed to respond to a job post on one of those sites. She didn't appreciate my humor. Cathy Life's uncertain, have dessert first!
