You know, doesn't the EULA for these OS's say that doing any performance benchmarks will result in your instantanious death by slow Vistacution? For example, it seems like half the EULA on VS2008 is about what you can and cannot performance benchmark, and on what is allowed, how you have to go about publishing your results. Man, Microsoft must be worried. :) For Microsoft, the wow and the ow have started all over again, with siblings Windows Vista and Windows XP fighting in the back seat of the car causing all of the trouble. So who's driving? A penguin? Gotta love these metaphors! Marc

Interesting read. You might say that by SP3 they have gotten XP right. ;)

You are not the only one out there who seems to have noted the speed of 2K, on old or modern hardware. What types of test are you running to arrive at 'twice' though?

And Windows NT is twice as fast as 2k. Windows 95 is twice is fast as Windows 98. Windows 3.1 is twice as fast as Windows 95. (or in other words, 3.1 is 16x as fast as Vista!) Fortunately, hardware improvements more or less cancel this difference. We've traded speed for more features. Over time, all software spoils[^]. More features, more sophistication, more complexity, bigger downloads, bigger memory footprints, ad infinitum.

Nothing spoils the speed of a good ol console app. It gets me to vomit faster than anything else I've ever seen that wasn't affiliated with Lotus.

We should give him his own permanent username. Chris should agree not to ban him and he should get a special icon. I kind of like having him around. He keeps the place from getting dull.

When XP came out, I did comparisons on identical Compaq systems and found very little difference in performance. Adding memory and a better hard drive did wonders for both. Neither was as fast as Win98, however, though the latter was more unstable.

So Vista was already 0.55 the speed of SP2? Color me not surprised.
