I'll get slagged for it but iTunes is my choice.

If that's what rocks your boat then fine. It's a good choice. Damn. Did I say that?

hehe. In this context it means I'll get verbally abused, jeered at, ripped off etc.

Know any good ones? I usually just use the windows media player (it doesn't deserve its capital letters), but recently its been freezing up for a few moments every now and then. At first i thought it was the internet, but it still did it when nothing was running. So anyway, i'm just uninstalling any media based applications i don't need anymore, as well as old codecs and stuff. And while thats going i thought i'd ask if anyone knew a good media player i could use instead. Something that can play everything, perhaps with the ability to have skins. I know lots of people like WinAmp an' all, but i really just want a player, no fancy features that i'm never gonna use.

It's still quite a way from a final release, but it's certainly worth keeping your eye out on this one: http://www.songbirdnest.com/ It's usable now, but I wouldn't want to switch over completely just yet. In the mean time I actually like iTunes too. (Just turn off all the annoying links to the iMusic store) Mat Wilcoxson England

Agreed. It plays FLV along with most other formats including DVDs. It's a streaming server and client. Just great. We use it to broadcast TV from USB receivers over the wireless network. Though it does have a playlist capability it doesn't have all the great ways you can organize and present playlists in Media Player and isn't as nice to look at.

I use Winamp docked to the bottom of the screen as a single bar - don't use any of the fancy stuff much but as a player it does everything I need it too and unlike WMP its never in the way and can be set to auto hide too.

But, does anyone really sit and spend time simply looking at their media player? I mean, I've heard some users do that with macs though I figured it was because the mac does very little else besides look good. I use foobar2000. Can be set to work lots of ways, plenty of support for plugins if you really need organisation or album viewers, but I stuck a whole load of files into some folders in My Music, onto one big playlist and the hell with organising it. Half of them have the album information and genre tags removed. I use VLC for videos and that works great, though I've found the playlist support is unreliable and I would much rather hide it on the taskbar like foobar.

Hold it hold it! Do you mean that apple actually allow their users to configure something every now and then? I might need to rethink my entire stance on macs. Heck, I might consider it a real platform now that I realise that it's vaguely customisable.

Absolutely, VLC is excellent. For something a little more hip, try Miro (based on VLC and Mozilla's XUL), you can add a local path for your own library, and it's youtube integration works well.

Macs? I'm not using one of them! I meant iTunes on Windows. (And that's either one of the best or the worst combinations...!) Matt Wilcoxson England

Media Monkey at mediamonkey.com. absolute must if you have thousands in your library. It can auto tag from the amazon database including album art. It can reorganize your file names and/or directories. i.e by selecting all of my library I can "Auto Organize" to have my music stored as \MyMusic\Artist\Album\Artist - Track_Title.mp3 or just as simple to redo to \MyMusic\Artist\Track_Title.mp3 Syncs with most of all media players out there. Most winamp plugins work with also. To help the DJ at my sisters wedding (who was using my computer) he ran to instances of media monkey with a cross fad plugin and did a fantastic job. He loved now its his software of choice. I only use iTunes to get podcasts and sync any mp4 video to my iPod. All other task are done with MM. Goodluck :-D
