Developer. Hands down. But also the mortality rate of developers is much higher.

Generally speaking, a developer earns more. But you would have to assume everyone in the world was working in the same company. ;) A tester at company A may earn more than a developer at company B. But since the question is generic - the generic answer is developer. GauranG: Who earns more, a tester or a developer? Steve B: Developers, developers, developers!

UAT testers (users) tend to earn more than developers and have a better work-life balance to boot. That is why we don't like them...

Not true. Frequently, managers are heard screaming "Don't go into the light" when it gets close to deadlines. Those paddles that are used by paramedics are always at hand, ready for the astute manager to revive the poor coder who dared to die on his watch.

Microsoft have virtually removed the Software Test Engineer role, replacing almost completely with Software Development Engineer in Test (SDE/T). The difference is that the tester (STE) would generally perform tests by hand and observe the results directly, while the SDE/T develops automated tests and automated reading of the logs. The SDE/T will take longer to produce tests but ultimately more tests can be run on every new build; however, the automated tests can only observe the problems they are programmed to observe, they cannot spot some other fault that has occurred. I think this change of emphasis has led to generally lower software quality coming out of MS.

Testers earn more. At least they earn more than they're worth, whereas developers earn less than they're worth. :-D

Hi, i don't want to compare a tester and a devloper. I just want the simple reviews to the simple question. That all.

When I hear such requests, I am often answer with another question (okay I do that a lot anyhow, but bear with me). Why does it really matter? Why do you want to know? My brother asked such questions when he was choosing a career, because he wanted a career that made him the most money. Life to him was a balance of getting the most out of your career choice with the least put in. Okay a doctor or a lawyer made more money, but they had to have the most education. So he turned a career choice into a mathematical formula for evaluation. education/time in, and money out. Through careful examination of the level of effort vs. pay he determined quite scientifically that mechanical engineering was the highest paid profession for the least amount of schooling (given you can earn reasonably significant sums with only a BS). But to answer your question... it isn't as easy as that. I have done testing, for free and received in exchange hardware and software tested without paying a dime. In that way I was able to use some products that I could never have afforded to buy when I started out as a programmer. On a global average, the pay for a tester is on the low end, but a good quality tester can earn significant sums in barter as well as income. Playing your cards right, and being good, can lead you to make more money than a low-end developer. Area affects all income for jobs, and sometimes reverses income differences. What is lacking always pays more, what is too abundant always pays less.

Not true. Frequently, managers are heard screaming "Don't go into the light" when it gets close to deadlines. Those paddles that are used by paramedics are always at hand, ready for the astute manager to revive the poor coder who dared to die on his watch.

I assumed they were yelling at the top of their lungs, "I am your manager, and I am waiting for you in the light." knowing full well their employees would flee heaven to avoid them by any cost. :-D
