I've done a lot of reading on brain sex differences, which has segued into some reading on aspergers. My wife works for speech therapists and sees some Aspergers and autistic kids, both she and her boss believe I have a mild form of Aspergers. Not sure if that's true or not, nor do I care overmuch one way or the other. ( just to explain that, whatever I have, I've learned to live with it, so labels don't really matter to me ) According to a book I read, one possible cause for Aspergers is a highly masculinised brain. I'd agree, we probably have more than our share around here.

Do you do the "Single Goal" thing? That is whatever your target is to reach, all else is subsumed until that target or goal is achieved, then you move to the next item. Regardless of what else is happening. (It is exampled by the fact that the house could burn down around you, but you just have to finish re-arranging your books in topic/author surname in alphabetical order before running from the flames!)

I'm undecided. I definately get very focused, and I definately let other things suffer so I can finish what I am doing, but I'd be a long way from letting something major fall apart because I'm working on something that I could make a value judgement on as being less important. I'm a good multitasker, so I'd have to say probably not. The diagnosis is meant to explain my lack of social skills, more than anything.

I was wondering how many in here have Aspergers to one extent or another. I have it, (I don't say I suffer from it, as it isn't something that you suffer from, merely something you have to live your life with). In general it is about 1% of the population that have some form of the condition, but I suspect it may well be much higher in here. For those unaware of it... Link to Aspergers Society[^] I find it funny it is called the Aspergers Society, for obvious and humerous reasons!:-D

That has to do with Classic ASP right? (the link is taking too long to open for me to find out) :)

I line up my MnM's in colour order, and eat the most populated field first, working to the rarest. I love Astronomy,Computers and Maths,(Accountant for a living). Precision in speech is important to me. Pedantic, by the great gods of asgaard, am I pedantic? well, yes, I am actually, to the n^6 degree! ( in fact I am the 3rd most pedantic person I know!) Clothing obsessive? I like only to wear black at work. Can sit and have full conversations with myself, and often do as I am the cleverest person in my office. (I am the Only Person in my office, but even if I wasn't...well you get the idea). Aspergers have trouble interacting, so we are seen as loners, but it is mainly because we are like Jean Paul Sartre, Hell is Other People!

I do like black though. I get stick because I wear it so much. But I feel vaguely sad, uncomfortable and tense, when I can't wear at least really dark blue jeans and a black T-shirt or shirt. It's not just work either. I have about 30 black t-shirts in varying stages of fade. And 4 other t-shirts that aren't black. They're generally "witty caption" t-shirts, the kind you might wear to the pub or a concert or something.

I put this behaviour in myself down to my being an anally retentive SOB. Nice to know that I can now say it's not my unpleasant personality, it's Aspergers. Throw in the odd case of coding Tourettes and I'm a nice person.

Used to have it then my wife trained me out of it. I'd come home and wander round the house lining things up and making sure my shirts were hanging by colour and short/long sleeve: apparently the wife and kids would watch me straighten and line up everything in the kitchen. I would know if someone had even breathed in the direction of my stuff, never mind if they took a pen without putting it back. OCD? You bet I was. I would imagine that it was pretty mild since I have been able to stop some of my more 'obsessive' behaviour. Perhaps it's about getting older as well: these things no longer seem very important.

I put this behaviour in myself down to my being an anally retentive SOB. Nice to know that I can now say it's not my unpleasant personality, it's Aspergers. Throw in the odd case of coding Tourettes and I'm a nice person.

I agree. The social skills thing is the most salient aspect of Aspergers and the one which causes most damage. I mean, I'm obsessive-compulsive and totally insufferable about some things, but I think that this line of work draws that kind of mindset, even exacerbates it to a point. And it pales in comparison to the experience of my brother. My bro is Aspergers and he's a good developer, but his condition has hampered the course of his life to the degree that is hard for me to watch. For starters, his work interaction is for sh*t, which has led to a situation whereby I earn about a third on top of what he does, despite the fact that a) I consider myself a good intermediate-level developer, and I'm not crazy workaholic about it like some people, and b) I've been in this game for a total of 7 years on and off, with a 2-year gap in between to take drugs and play in a rock band, compared to my bro's lifelong obsession with computers and programming them, and the fact that he's 8 years older. Also, in private life, he is totally impossible to watch. one minute, he will let people walk all over him, because he just can't bring himself to care about the things he should. Then, you cross wires on some insignificant little thing, and he will actually blow up in front of your eyes. I'm the only one in the family who can talk him down, and it takes on average about 20-30 minutes. I once watched him punch a hole in a door because he got into a philosophical argument with my sister about whether or not he should apply for a job that he wanted but felt underqualified for. Her attitude was, why count yourself out at the get-go, when if you throw your hat in, so to speak, you just might get it? And his attitude was why apply for a job when you're not a perfect fit. He breaks my friggin' heart to be honest.

My son's classmate a few years ago was diagnosed with Aspergers. I think it was particularly difficult for the class, as children tend to stumble around a lot as they learn each others "signals". The teacher was fantastic though and really handled the class very well, making sure that the child wasn't ridiculed and that everyone was respected. Marc

I used to think so, but then I realised that I could read people exceptionally well, and that my bedroom is a dump, and numerous other things. My behaviours that coincided with Asperger's I realised could be attributed to other things, namely IQ difference, HSP, INTJ, and neurotic perfectionism, amongst other things. I know, I spend WAY too much time delving into myself. ;P
