So, I have a 7 year old son. This year, the toy that is hot, is Ben10. It's *genius*. For those unaware, Ben Tenneson is a boy who finds an alien watch. When he hits the watch, he turns into one of 10 aliens. Plus, there have been a couple of other aliens that appear on the watch from time to time. SO..... this means that for him to have Ben as an action figure, I need to buy 12 different figurines. THEN he wants the rest of his 'team' and some baddies to fight. Every store seems to carry only 3 of these things, and most are sold out. Some stores locally have not had Ben10 toys for months, they sell as soon as they arrive. With Xmas around the corner, it's too late to get friends to buy in the US and ship, it just might not make it ( seriously, the mail really slows down this time of year ). So, I am reduced to bidding on these things on ebay. Which I'm afraid does not mean I am buying them for less than retail. He's not going to get them all, but I know which ones are his favourites, he'll get a mix of the ones he likes and the ones I manage to pick up cheap. The only reason I'm going this far with it, is that my daughter gets tickets to Hillary Duff, which come with a flight to melbourne and a weekend in a hotel as part of her present. ( to be clear, I fly her to Melbourne and she stays with me, she only sees Hilary at the concert )

Holy CRAP, *you're* going to a Hillary Duff concert? Or are you letting her go by herself to the concert? God I'd poke my eyes out and pour wax in my ears if I had to listen to that! :)

Since you seem to be the coolest Dad ever... I want "an official Red Ryder, carbine action, two-hundred shot range model air rifle, with a compass in the stock and 'this thing' which tells time". In case this movie is not popular outside the US, Clicky![^]

That should take his mind off his "fixation." :-D Is that still a problem or have you figured out a way to deal with it?

Try this: Block the show on your cable box or what have you. Tell your son the show has been canceled and that nobody cool plays with Ben10 toys anymore. Look for a series of cartoons that has been out for a while longer. Something like the Ninja Turtles maybe. Make him watch all the episodes of that whenever it's on. There's only 4 turtles anyhow, so you're already saving money. Good Luck.

I see Iron Maiden three times the following week. I am undecided what to wear to Hilary, I'd like to, but I don't want to be an embarrassment to my daughter ( well, I want to limit the level at least )

Buy him a .22 rifle. They're fun, and probably cheaper than all of his BenTen buddies.

No way she could go alone, so I have to go. Three Maiden concerts the following week will be my recovery

I see Iron Maiden three times the following week. I am undecided what to wear to Hilary, I'd like to, but I don't want to be an embarrassment to my daughter ( well, I want to limit the level at least )

that's long term recovery. What's your short term survival plan? Maiden on the iPod with oversized noise cancelling headphones to keep the background noise out?
