Several years ago (I think back in 2000) my wife got a small, hand held DAT recorder to use for record her and her sisters live performances as well as making the occasional recording if they found a nice place to play. A few months ago she asked me to get some more tapes and when I went to buy them the guy at the store mentioned that they (Sony) were not making the DAT recorders anymore, and that soon you wouldn't be able to buy tapes any more :( Tonight my wife called and asked if I could pick up some more tapes. I'll try, but I'm not expecting to be successful. If it is the case that DAT tapes are no longer available, anyone out there with experience recording musicians have any suggestions on what to replace them with? Is there something out there that people are using instead of DAT recorders? Preferably something hand held. Frankly I'm kind of surprised they are dropping them. Was this something brewing for a while that I missed because I don't pay much attention to the music/recording industry?

True - the format never really took off as a consumer product, so Sony pulled the plug. However, they are still used in TV and Radio so whilst you may not be able to buy them "in-store" a quick search of eBay should yield positive results... like this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/Lot-of-Ten-10-DC4-90-2gb-4mm-DAT-DDS-1-Tapes-NEW_W0QQitemZ180183950587QQihZ008QQcategoryZ39977QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem[^]

But when she scanned the card the machine said I hadn't. Can you transfer the content of your existing tapes to cd and reuse them?

Might sound bad at first but hey It was about time for it to go, and yes DAT was and still is used heavily for vinyl and prototype production. It was the 48Khz sample rate advantage over CD's which many found/find sounding too flat. Grabbing anything out there that has a good A/D converter and a lossless format should do. The norm these days, last time I checked, was the 96 to 192 Khz equipment which sounds awesome. You will also find plenty of stories on how it affects the bottom response heavily apparently. Although software out there is starting to support the new standards in sampling, it does utilise quite a few more CPU cycles and disk space as you can imagine (you really need latest Xeon, 1333 mhz bus-es and some space to play with it properly). Tapes are just too slow for fast random access, just google for portable (96khz) recorders and you will find offerings from Sony (usual overpriced snobbery esp in EU), Edirol/Roland and many others. (perhaps portable 'mini' pc-s, heck even laptops are a good option esp as post usb2.0, firewire seems to be coming into play with many manufacturers ripping off for a few a/d/a converters ) -- modified at 18:29 Thursday 29th November, 2007

There are hard drive- and solid state-based devices now. The main advantage over DAT is the lack of dropouts and the ability to transfer the music to your PC in faster than real time. They can also do 24-bit recording at sampling rates of 88.2 kHz and 96 kHz. Check out this[^] and this[^].

I recently bought an Edirol UA-25 USB audio interface. My laptop is now a recording studio. It's not hand held, but it is a great piece of gear. 96k 24-bit sample/sec, 2 channels. It's about the size of a paperback book.
