That's a bummer (for its owner). I order everything from the internet anyway, so it doesn't concern me.

Thats why its closing, bigger supermarket type places could sell i wider variety of stuff, at a lower price. And people could shop online for cheaper products. Don't worry about the owner though, they still own many other businesses. He just lost his big name in the USA, shame.

Well, that sucks. I buy all my impulse purchases from there! Video game for the weekend sir? The only other choice within 50 miles of here is Best Buy and I've never found them to have as much inventory, and I hate the noise level from the competing TV, audio and computer games departments. I get a lot of books from CompUsa too - usually the ones that are a few years old, but can be picked up for $10-$20 instead of $50-$60.

I haven't gone there in years. I buy everything from NewEgg[^], ZipZoomFly[^] or occasionally elsewhere if the prices are right. I'm not suprised they've gone out of business - they were twice the price of an on-line store.
I'm largely language agnostic
After a while they all bug me

I hate to see any company go under, but I must admit they hurt their own reputation by word of mouth, kept high prices to make up for the loss in sales due to their own damaged reputation, which only hurt it more, etc., etc. So they did have a large hand in their own loss, still it is sad to see a company that large go under. But I'll even out the score, yours and mine are just opinions after all. Not worthy of condemnation as such.

Not me. I got ripped off by them when they wouldn't honor a rebate. Even though they acknowleged that thier employee made the mistake. I hated that store with all its stupid rebates. Good riddance.

I'll admit I haven't bought much there, but they were the only BIG computer-focused store here in Nashville. Yes, their rebates were questionable, though I, personally, had an over 90% redemption rate. Some of us don't like to buy online, unless we have to. It's much easier to return something in a store. And, my brother and I were looking for memory recently and CompUSA's prices were WAY below Best Buy, Circuit City, or the office trio (OfficeMax, Office Depot, and Staples) and this was long before the announcement. No one has the amount of computer SKUs that CompUSA had, in this market anyway. Though, CompUSA had twice as many SKUs three years ago. I do think that their attempt to get into Big Screen TVs and home theater was a mistake. So now I have to choose from the Bix Box yahoos or the shady local computer stores or risk online purchasing. I know others of you disagree, but I don't like those options. In conclusion, CompUSA was not my FIRST choice for computer stuff, but I WILL miss them as A CHOICE.

Why is it a risk? If you use a credit card (Visa/MC) and there is a problem you simply write a letter to your credit card issuer in a timely manner and have them do a charge back. If you are a good customer the issuing bank will probably even cover you for losses that they would not normally cover if you want to push it. Many issuers advertise extended coverage as well. See the following link for some specifics (note that even though it is CA most of the regs apply everywhere in the US.) http://ag.ca.gov/consumers/general/credit_card_chargeback_rights.php[^]

I was not clear the first time... You are right, it is not a risk in the sense of losing the purchase price, tax and, probably, shipping. But, most mail-order/internet merchants make you pay your own freight for the return. So, I've still lost that money, which can be substantial for something of moderate to heavy weight like a Desktop computer, CRT monitor, laser printer, etc. Plus, the time and aggravation to pack that stuff back up, wait in line at the Post Office, UPS, or FedEx, and get it shipped out and wait for them to receive the return and credit it. That is, of course, after waiting to get it in the first place.

The time and wait I can see, but I have rarely had shipping exceed the 7-10% sales tax of buying things locally. Usually the price online far favors shipping over tax. For instance, a 2000.00 computer system might cost $50 to ship when catching a good sale, but even assuming it ships for $200.00 equal to the price of 10% sales tax of Texas, or $140.00 for 7% sales tax in NM, the price in the store would usually be about $2500.00 for the same unit found online. So you either have to get a cheaper unit, skimping on quality in favor of store-prices to make up the difference, or you pay the extra for store prices. Sure I do for some items, why wait? but when push comes to shove, online prices are almost always the clear winner on a apples to apples comparison. You have to give up quality to make the prices look better locally. Now you can some times get added services, value added to the item of interest. This is where local can win. The computer store in Alamogordo would take trade-ins, thus I would recoup part of my original investment in computer parts and stay current in computer hardware. They get quality used parts to resale, and new parts for my machine, and they got to advertise my machine to get wannabes to buy. We all won hands down over internet prices, even though the original investment was more than online, the eventual price was better. But it had nothing to do with price, it was the value added for service. Price to price, online was a clear winner. as far as exchanges/returns. Exchanges are usually equal online as in the store, with some places paying for return shipping as long as you get an direct exchange. In stores, many charge restocking fees of up to 15% anymore so you loose either way equally for items returned and not exchanged.
