Or perhaps the lack of. I'm writing this after closing my PayPal account and requesting that my eBay account be closed/deleted (apparently you are not allowed to do this yourself). I've taken these actions as a result of receiving half a dozen suspicious emails yesterday from two eBay users. These emails were followed up 12 hours later by an email from eBay's security people telling me that they "suspected unauthorised access to my account" had occurred. Now I will grant that I may have been the subject of a pretty good phishing attack, but I do have some doubts. My main doubts are because I haven't been using my eBay/PayPal accounts in over 6 months. The other concern I have is Ebay's use of the word that I have italicized. I interpret that to mean that my account was accessed/used in some manner, that did not require the normal userid/password login process to have taken place. Because if it that process had taken place, then obviously, the actions would have been authorised. So later this evening when I get home, I'll check my emails and see what kind of response I get from eBay. Regardless, it is the last time I will be using their service. I'm sure some others can add their horror stories, too. :)

This just happened to me last month. I wound up with $1200 worth of charges through my PayPal account for stuff I most certainly hadn't purchased. I only closed my PayPal account though. But I hadn't used my accounts in a while too.

Were you able to work out with PayPal that the charges were bogus?

Did you attempt to look at someone selling "adult" content and it requested you to re-enter your password to verify you were an adult? If that's the case you've misinterpreted unauthorized, as they meant that you hadn't authorized it, not that they circumvented security.

I got hit for $1500 a couple of years ago. The guy never even saw the money though; PayPal froze and reversed the transaction within hours. Was my own fault for using a simple password, which obviously was then changed to a much stronger one.

Everything got taken care of in about 2 weeks (including time for the money to get refunded to my bank account). The only real issue I had with PayPal was that the transactions forced my account to overdraft, which my bank charges me fees for. So I wound up losing about $90 in overdraft charges, but got my $1200 back.
