So I have a couple hundred dollars to spend, I'm not a hardcore gamer and not too bothered about spending double that on PS3 or 360 or Wii. So which way should I go PS2 or XBox?

Most of the games for the Wii are pure lighthearted fun. The games and the controller force you to get up and get involved, rather than sit back and play. It has the least powerful hardware (and thus, less impressive graphics) than the other consoles. Because of this, it's also the cheapest of the 3. Not the best choice for hardcore gamers; I tried out some shooters and was disappointed; I've seen better graphics and gameplay on PC games. The XBox360 has great online gaming, plus the excellent Halo 3. Hardware is less powerful than PS3, but far more powerful than the Wii. The PS3 has the most powerful hardware, and is about the same price as the XBox360 now. There are fewer games for it, though; the Xbox360 was released far earlier than PS3, and developers have had a hard time programming the powerful hardware in the PS3, resulting in fewer titles. Summary: I'd recommend a Wii. It's a lot of fun, especially if you've got family or friends to play with. My family loves the simple sport games bundled with the Wii, for instance. If you're into shooters, or if you're gonna be playing by yourself, then I'd recommend an Xbox360 right now; Halo online should be a blast for you. PS3...I'd wait. Right now things don't look so hot for the console, reminiscent of the failed Dreamcast. We'll see though...games like Metal Gear may bring it to life. *edit* oops, I see you're asking about the old systems. I'd recommend a PS2 then.

Dreamcast is still popular with some hardcore gamers. There are a few games that go for $50 on eBay.

I've heard there is a small cult following for that console. Nonetheless, it was a commercial failure.

No matter what, the Wii is the only option worth considering.

Was it a Wii that Corey ( your husband is Corey, right ? ) bought to resell ? Did it get resold ? Did you play it first ? How did you find it ?

Actually he has the girly spelling of Kori. We've bought and sold five or six Wii's for friends and family. He just stumbles on them. We did get a couple the day after Thanksgiving from GameStop. We also bought a Rock Band for the PS3 but the prices have not been steady because of the strum bar issue so I'm making him take that back.

I thought there was a K, but Korey looked all wrong.... LOL - so he has a regular reseller gig going on then ? They are still hard to find there ? They are easy to get here.

Can you guys not read? He said he DIDN'T want to buy a PS3 or XBox360 due to the price. He wants opinions on the PS-TWO vs the X-Box (NO NUMBER). The PS2 has some an incredible library and actually still has some (very few) games being released for it, you will be able to find all sorts of deals on great games and less likely to have problems. I will echo the sentiment that the games are the reason to buy the console. Another possibility to consider would be a Nintendo DS, it's a lot of fun, and depending on the type of games you want to play and other factors (do you travel etc) it can be a great piece of hardware. Anyway at that price point I still would say it's worth stepping up to the Wii, as you'll get a "current gen" console (IE more likely to have the current games produced for it), and the console is targeted at fun more than any other.

There's no way the PS3 would go the way of the Dreamcast. The PS line and its game series have a huge following. Besides it's Sony behind it. It's already selling decently and once the killer apps like MGS4 and FF13 comes out it'll really move. As for the OP's question, it really comes down to what kind of games do you prefer. Just go to a gaming site, look at the top games for each console and see which have more games that peek your interest.

Until my back died, I was getting little shots at Mario Galaxy. My 7 year old son has way more stars than I do, b/c I can't play now, and I wasn't playing much to start with. It's an amazing game tho

I would go with the Xbox, coz it is compatible with Xbox live(just recently). Anyway, I like the arcade ,there is a lot of small games you can do on the cheap. Oh, did I say "on the cheap".

If you're not enamored with the Wii (should be first on your list, really -- this is coming from a PS3 owner, heh), if you're going for an "older" console I'd suggest the PS2. There are plenty of games of all genres available, and games are still being developed for it. The original Xbox was pretty much abandoned by Microsoft once the Xbox 360 came out. Flynn

It's already selling decently and once the killer apps like MGS4 and FF13 comes out it'll really move. As for the OP's question, it really comes down to what kind of games do you prefer. Just go to a gaming site, look at the top games for each console and see which have more games that peek your interest.

So I have a couple hundred dollars to spend, I'm not a hardcore gamer and not too bothered about spending double that on PS3 or 360 or Wii. So which way should I go PS2 or XBox?

You could consider upgrading your PC. There are very few games I like playing on consoles (plus, for some reason, my kids fight more about playing games if a console is around. My brother and brother-in-law's kids are the same. There's something about the things that brings out the animal in kids.)

In that case, I would recommend PS2. Next-gen wise I'd choose the opposite, that is X360 over PS3 (at least for the time being).

They are the super hot item for this xmas. They are going on eBay for outrageous prices. GameStop is now doing a raincheck program with Nintendo.

Until my back died, I was getting little shots at Mario Galaxy. My 7 year old son has way more stars than I do, b/c I can't play now, and I wasn't playing much to start with. It's an amazing game tho
