I'm running Vista and play with Inkscape and photo editing software quite often. I've often thought of getting a tablet interface because it's damned hard to draw freehand with a mouse. Also I will be looking at testing out some stuff using the pen features in Vista like recognition etc so it's also a legitimate work thing but I'd like to get one suitable for artistic uses as well. I did some research today but I'm so out of my depth on this I don't even know where to start, I was trying to find tablets that are supported by both Inkscape and Vista but I think I'm pioneering in that area or chose the wrong keywords. I thought I would throw it out here to ask for anyone's best guess good tablets you might have experience with to look at. I know Wacom has been around forever but in looking at their product line I think I see one cheapie that will likely turn out to be useless and then more expensive ones that are probably out of my range, I really don't have any extra money for this right now I'm hoping for a good ebay deal or something if I can find the right one. In other words I want something cheap enough for hobbying but not crappy cheap. Anything I should look for, any suggestions?

I've used this[^] one for the past two years. It's well made and works great for me. I use if for photo touchups, illustrations and 3D painting (UV textures and bumb maps). In retrospect, a larger one would have been handier for me, but it's certainly big enough for most uses. Cheers, Drew.

I have had an AIPTEK A4 tablet for about 5 years. Good value and easy to use. I use it for photo re-touching - CAD drawing etc..

Genius seems to have equivalent models for around a 1/4 of the price. I am tempted to get one too, those ASCII drawing dont work so well :)

I have used a Graphire Tablet mouse for ages. When I first got Vista 64 it did not work properly as a mouse due to driver issues. It worked fine on Vista 32 though. That was back in the beta days so I am sure those are all worked out now. The Graphire tablet is small but works great as a mouse with the ability to use the pen when you want to. I wuold use it a lot in photoshop for editing. I would imagine their larger tablets would work also.

Absolutely not at all!!!! I bought a Volito 2[^] from Amazon for about £25 - and it's just brillant... I use it mainly for Blender 3D stuff, but also for art packages (Artrage that comes with the Volito is excellent btw)....no idea about compatibility with Vista, but it does work in Inkscape / PSP / Gimp etc...etc...
