Remote Desktop?

If you've ever used KVM you wouldn't even have suggested that. :-D But when you get Remote Desktop working on 2 Macs, 2 Linux boxes and one BSD box gimme a call. :laugh:

Ahh... but you didn't put that in to the requirements! :) Best of luck, and all that Jazz. I have a couple of crappy PS/2 keyboards and mice I could let you have for postage, only 1) they're rubbish 2) postage would be 100 x more than their value.

Ahh... but you didn't put that in to the requirements! :) Best of luck, and all that Jazz. I have a couple of crappy PS/2 keyboards and mice I could let you have for postage, only 1) they're rubbish 2) postage would be 100 x more than their value.

Well I sort of did. I clearly explained what I was looking for (hardware) and I clearly explained why I needed it (KVM) so my requirements were pretty tight. :-D Remote desktop is a wonderful thing but even if it was all windows machines I like being able to hotkey across multiple machines. Managing all those windows gets tedious and requires a network connection. Watching video over it tends to stink, playing games over it really stinks and well... you get the idea. ;P

Nay I say! I'm sure a low cost solution exists. I have no desire to try and keep up with NASA. That means I'd have to let one person a week walk out of my office with a hard drive containing sensitive data and then I'd have to tell the public that I was sorry I lost it but I do think it was filled with classified data and hope we get it back before the Libyan's find it. :laugh:

I have a special situation in which I'd like to connect a USB keyboard and a USB mouse to a PS/2 KVM switch. About a year ago I searched Google on this topic and there were so few hits I figured there was no chance. I asked here and I think Roger Wright (maybe not) confirmed that at the time there wasn't a square peg for the square hole. I just recently searched again and have found about 20 or 30 cables that *might* be what I am after but I cannot really read the techno-jargon that well. My keyboard is a separate USB and my mouse is a separate USB and I need something to convert them to PS/2. The trick is that those green little adapters you get in the packaging don't work and I don't know why. There has to be more electronics to in order for it to work. I'm sure now that such a thing does exist I just am unsure what it specifically is or where to get it. Has any of you run across such a thing? If so do you have a link? I have an 8 port PS/2 KVM that sits totally useless because it won't work with my Microsoft Ergonomic 4000 USB Keyboard. I have really terrible carpal tunnel (not with the 4000) so I cannot use anything but an ergonomic keyboard. The 4000 is the best thing I've found as it has a tilt built in. So anyway until I can find an adapter that works I'm out of luck. I could get a new KVM but I just cannot justify sinking in $300 - $600 right now nor in the near future. So if you know of something that might work I'd love to check it out. - Rex P.S. The big thread is kind of cool but extremely irritating can we get it moved out of the lounge? It's kind of lame to page 30 pages back just to bridge that gap in the lounge.

I have a dongle made by Belkin thats usb on one end (that I plug into a computer), 2 ps2 pigtails - for a ps2 mouse and keyboard coming from an older MasterView Video/CPU switch .. Im not sure thats what you need, maybe the 'genders' of the plugs would be wrong 'G'

Yeah I have that one and it takes PS/2 and translates it to USB. I need something that takes USB and translates it to PS/2.

hmmm.. well, if it were me .. I dont know if you can slice apart the plastic connector and see how its wired (I dont have one to sacrifice right yet, it would be new year before I could acquire one) ... given the info obtained from seeing how thats wired, I'd go to an electronics store and buy a USB female and PS2 Male connectors and/or cut them off unused cables that I have, then solder them up .. it shouldnt be too hard to find USB wiring specs and PS2 plug specs on the web, either, or at your fav electronic store ... its not 'impossible', just fiddly - sorry Rex 'g'

Yeah, that's true. I'm one of those people that is not 'at home' with the fiddly part of electronics. I made it through digital design but the bread board still had me a bit edgy. I'm even more edgy when I ponder the possibility of cooking my desktop on our current budget. I have an adapter I'd sacrifice. If you send me an address I'll give her up for a worthy cause. :)

Wouldnt hear of it - besides, by the time it gets here (Australia) from USA I'll have one by then Let me see what research I can do and what parts I can find, I'll see if I can engineer a solution - I hope the carpal tunnels dont suffer too much, just rest them occasionally 'g'

The best I can do is tell you such a thing exists. I know this because we have this sort of KVM at our office. I do not know where we got it; and it has been so long since I used it that I don't even remember the brand. I can check on Monday.... Sorry I'm not more help :(

I have a pair of those adapters and the green one is for the mouse (it even has a mouse image on it) and the purple one is for the keyboard (again with a keyboard image on it) both work and are from Logitech. So you are looking for "Synergy" then. One keyboard, one mouse, treat all your screens as being off the one machine. It's on sourceforge. Supports Windows, Unix, Linux, and Mac OSX.

Have you checked out vnc and its derivatives? The client and server work on Linux and BSD, and there is also a version for the Mac.

I haven't got a part number, but it definitely is possible - we use the same setup to connect a USB mouse and keyboard to a 4 port KVM here. :)
