Woman from Arkansas gets 6 months in jail for sending "racially charged letter"

No one should get jail time for that. She was expressing her views.

I PLEAD GUILTY to typing this message, and in this message I said NIGGER. Do I get jail time now?

Of course, that free speech thingy doesn't apply when minorities might get their feelings hurt. And if these "hate speech" laws were applied to everyone Kamau Kambon[^] would be in jail, not teaching a college class.

What part of Plead Guilty do you not comprehend?

He probably should be. But his crime does not excuse hers.

But do you think she should have been charged in the first place? Political correctness is like a religion, there is no evidence that it is beneficial, and it it's proponents act like offended Muslims whenever a white person is hateful, all while black people like the one in the youtube video I posted a few posts up can get by with saying things much more racist than what she said. Oh, and get out of my thread Joshua, your agreement is the last thing anyone needs.

Wow, you seriously are dumb. To Plead Guilty you have to be charged with a crime. What I was saying is that politically incorrect speech should not be a crime.

She was stupid enough to use the U.S Mail to threaten them (hence charge # 1). She accused them of damaging property values just by their racial composition (hence charge #2). Just for her white trash stupidity she deserved to be charged. And to repeat: the bad acts of others DO NOT EXCUSE this bad act. In no moral code, no system of ethics, nor code of justice do two wrongs cancel each other out.

That statement right there disqualifies you from making any future arguments on this or related subjects. If that statement is true then you deserve to be punished for your stupidity.

I missed the part about threats. Don't you think terroristic threatening would have gotten more than 6 months?

http://www.arktimes.com/blogs/arkansasblog/2007/12/sentencing_in_maumelle_hate_cr.aspx[^] Because the letter violated the recipients "fair housing" rights. Who cares about free speech when the feelings of minorities are stake!

As I understand, it's feds business because she sent it with mail? I haven't read the letter, but the punishment seems disproportionate.

I think there is a fine line between free speech and inciting fear/violence. If the free speech is directed on one person to incite fear then I think that is heinous--but I don't believe in hate crimes. A white family could do the same to another white resident based on religion, sex, sexual orientation etc. Intimidation is intimidation.

Quite simply, Yes. She gave the victims cause to fear for their own safety and freedom by threatening them. That is the line between the freedom to insult people and ending up in jail to protect others. Is it worth 12 months (6 in prison, 6 house arrest)? That is for your laws and your judges to decide.

As a white man, I'm entitled to hold that opinion of that woman, no racism involved. She, and you, are lousy representatives for our common race.

I think your have completely missed the point as usual. I never defended what she said. In my reply to you I was merely pointing out the hypocrisy that she (a white woman) goes to jail for accusing black people of lowering property values while a black college professor can keep his job after calling for the genocide of white people. And I was also pointing out that the constitutional right to freedom of speech is being disregarded in favor of political correctness. Not that I expect you to see my point though, considering that all you seem capable of is the knee jerk "OMG RACISM!1!!1!" reaction.

Evidently the woman's own lawyer felt she had made one. If he thought she had not, he would not have advised a guilty plea. You seem to forget that the woman plead guilty - i.e. she admitted to committing whatever the hell she was charged with.
