Garam Masala

So, what interesting recipes does our Indian contingent have that involves this delicious mixture of spices? I've used it in a soup this weekend, which was excellent. What veggies might be good with it (seeing as my gf is vegetarian and I'm 90% veggie)? Eggplant perhaps? Marc

Bombay Potato![^] Mmmmmmmmmmm.
"On one of my cards it said I had to find temperatures lower than -8. The numbers I uncovered were -6 and -7 so I thought I had won, and so did the woman in the shop. But when she scanned the card the machine said I hadn't. "I phoned Camelot and they fobbed me off with some story that -6 is higher - not lower - than -8 but I'm not having it." -Tina Farrell, a 23 year old thicky from Levenshulme, Manchester.

It's one of the plethora of herbs and spices (organic, no less) that can be bought at the Hawthorne Valley Farm Store[^] across the street from where my son goes to school. Marc

Almost any curry and vegetable dish can be spruced up with Garam Masala. Though I'm a vegetarian, I believe that Meat is swamped in a gravy that has Garam Masala among other things. For salads, you get something called Chat Masala which is another great blend of spices. Try Calcutta Chat or Bombay Chat at some good Indian eatery. It's too good and surprisingly, healthy too. And wish you a very Happy New Year to go with that...

a co-worker of mine brought in a broccoli masala for a potluck lunch a few months ago. i've been craving it ever since. it was her grandmothers recipe which she promised to get on her last trip back to bangalore, but hasn't produced it yet. i'm waiting impatiently... ;) if she ever shares it i'll let you know, but mix some up and go for it. it was delicious.

Broccoli, eh? I'll have to come up with something, and if it's good, I'll post it. While I like broccoli, my primary experience with it is the way my mom used to prepare it--smothered in swiss cheese. Not exactly Indian cuisine, hahaha. Marc

I doubt there is any food anywhere on the planet that you can't buy or make using ingredients bought at a grocery store anywhere in north america in any town larger than a few thousand people. Here in Canada in our smallish town the grocery store contains easily 10 to 20 different types of Indian spice preparations as dry spices or pastes or canned. Keep in mind that in North America we have immigration from all over the world for many decades now.
