VC2008 Feature Pack rant

Yes, but the installer itself shouldn't be beta ;)

Why? And have you bothered to tell MS about the problems you had with the installation?
originSH wrote:

Because this shouldn't be the first time they deploy an update for VS? Also I understand that they needed to update the Wizard, MFC DLLs etc, but come on, a 303 MB installer?
originSH wrote:

Not yet, but I'm going to post this on the VC blog.

I've downloaded the VC2008 Feature Pack (link below) yesterday, a whopping 303 MB installer for a MFC update and TR1 :omg: The setup files are then extracted to a folder in the root of the drive where VS2008 is installed. Why is there a directory called "Temp"? Ok, 10 minutes later the setup failed. The reason was quickly found out, drive C is full. Thankfully the installer left its 500 MB in the Windows\Installer directory  So I've cleaned up some space on C and run the setup again: "None of the products that are addressed by this software update are installed on this computer. Click Cancel to exit setup." Thanks Microsoft for selling an unfinished product which is now corrupted. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=D466226B-8DAB-445F-A7B4-448B326C48E7&displaylang=en[^]

Installing beta software is like committing statutory rape. Wait until it's of age, at least. Marc

So if you made a web site, and then made another web site that didn't something different your client should expect the second web site to work perfectly because "this isn't the first time you've made a web site"? Each installer is different, having to do different things, and making sure that the installer works correctly is part of the testing process. This is why there are beta releases, so that problems can be found and fixed. Betas always come with the warning "don't install this on an important machine and don't expect it to work correctly and it might even mean having to completely reinstalling your PC", so complaining about beta not working is pretty redundant.

That pack includes all the new controls, along with any resources that go with those controls. It'll also include the designers, the intellisense hint files, the syntax updates, all the new project templates, the code snippets, any new utilities, the new compiler etc It's not as if we're talking about a small amount of additions here where it's just updating a couple of things, it's adding a whole new chunk of functionality. For the majority of people now that download could be done in the time between leaving work one day and comming back in the next.

And if you must do it then don't go complaining when something breaks or you end up in a whole load of trouble? :wtf: This is rapidly degrading to soapbox territory.

Sure, but the other MFC component vendors manage to ship a 20 MB installer, including everything plus the documentation (and a lot more controls).
originSH wrote:

There is no designer for the new controls.

There is no new compiler. Or at least there shouldn't.

Beta means that I accept glitches in the new MFC controls, not a faulty installer (others having problems too) the size of VC6 altogether.

Nothing's corrupted, the only issue is the installer was only for Pro and Team System, but they screwed something up and it doesn't correctly identify Team System. So I'm uninstalling Team System and am downloading Pro from MSDN to check out this update...

It's a beta for MFC and the TR1 update to C++:
In addition, this release includes an implementation of TR1. Portions of TR1 are scheduled for adoption in the upcoming C++0x standard as the first major addition to the ISO 2003 standard C++ library. Our implementation includes a number of important features such as: · Smart pointers · Regular expression parsing · New containers (tuple, array, unordered set, etc) · Sophisticated random number generators · Polymorphic function wrappers · Type traits · And more!

Have you read my post? The setup detected VS2008 correctly the first time, then failed and now refuse to detect it again. That's what I call corrupted because obviously some keys etc. have been removed.

TR1 is like the MFC just a lib, no C++0x language additions. Therefore also no new syntax or compiler.

Yes, but the harddrive itself shouldn't be that close to being full. Let's see, you should keep about 10% free, you got 500MB of temp more than you expected (not unusual in compressed installers... uncompress to full size in temp and install), therefore you must have had a 5Gig disk on the machine if you were doing everything you were supposed to look out for also. :) sure there is a little on the MS side, but a little of the current problem is equally, if not greater shared with yourself. Sorry, but true.

You are right, I should have checked C before starting the setup. But let's summarize the required disk space: 303 MB for the installer 309 MB for the extracted setup files 200 MB somewhere on C 1.22 GB in Windows\Installer ------------------------------------ More than 2 GB 'temporary' disk space + the actual disk space in the installation folder For 2 native C++ libraries this is a mess, me thinks.

The installer is very much BETA. There is still issues to be worked out with it. Part of the reason for the BETA release was to test the installer. Did I mention it's BETA? FWIW, it took me three attempts to install it. If I had RTFM, I would have mounted the VS2008 install before attempting the feature pack install  Mark
