It'll be much nicer if they bring out the 8Gig, 9" screen and WinXP as standard edition :D http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/01/08/ces_2_gen_eee_pc_no_show/[^] I'm waiting for that release before getting one.

I wouldn't want Windows XP on it (Ubuntu will be fine for me) but the higher-resolution of 1024x600 will be welcome. Hopefully the price doesn't go much higher with the new one. €300 is a sweet spot, €400 would be starting to push it.

The higher res and bigger drive are a big plus ... the rumour is that it wont push up the price much more. I guess we'll just have to cross our fingers and hope.

Curious as to whether anyone here has used an Asus Eee PC[^] and what their thoughts on it are?

In a similar vein, has anyone got any recomendations on a UMPC tablet machine? I'm looking at the UBiQUiO 702[^] - any thoughts?

The Nokia N810 looks a lot more attractive for the same(?) specs.

xacc.ide - now with IronScheme support
          IronScheme - 1.0 alpha 1 out now

Nokia N series internet tables are a completely different beast. Those use some sort of ARM CPU and run unix flavors. They are fun to have, but they are not general purpose computer like the one OP linked to in a sense that you can't easily integrate it into a windows oriented business.

I've been drooling over Eeees for a wee while they do cool and very very portable.

so have I. The combination of the 800 pixel screen (bad web experience), and missing the initially hyped pricepoint have kept me from buying a 1.0 model. If they can hold the 2.0 to the same pricepoint as the current one I'll probably jump though.

Otherwise [Microsoft is] toast in the long term no matter how much money they've got. They would be already if the Linux community didn't have it's head so firmly up it's own command line buffer that it looks like taking 15 years to find the desktop. -- Matthew Faithfull

Well, I just become proud owner of one (401, 4G, Camera), and managed to install XP professional, and to remove extra stuff from it. Actually, I got more space left than I had originally with Linux version which came with it. It is good addtion to my mobile tools, and good supplement to my working notebook, (big 17" toshiba sattelite) which is not always practical to carry. Battery life is what I have expected, but I must definitely upgrade to 1g of ram (it came with 512). I also put 1g SD card which I use ase second drive - I will be upgrading to 4G soon. It tends to became hot when you work on power suplly though. I use set of portable apps (www.portableapps.com or something like that) and especially portable notepad ++. I'll keep you posted abou my experiences.

Excellent, thanks AleksandarK. Have you connected it to an external monitor at all and run it at 1600x1200?

No not yet, but i plan to conect it. It actually have two modes switchable form the xp task bar/tray icons. One 800x400 (default) and 800x600 (scrollable) which is tolerable for quick editing / browsing the code. I paid $409 CDN before taxes from resseler with cash discount - other stores offer it for $439. As I said, the 1GB ram upgrade is a must, and also having a big SD card as second drive. Actually I do acassionally connnect WD passport external drive to it, but there are cases when I could not afford draining batteries - hence SD card which is in all the time. I also use another 4GB memory stick.
