Multimedia phone versus MP3 player
-
The background: * I like listening to music a lot. * Can't store MP3s on work PC due to restrictions. * Have basic cellphone whose battery is dying. * New battery for cellphone will actually cost more than resale value of said phone. :wtf: The options: * Hand out/exchange old phone, and get new phone with built-in MP3 player (I'm thinking Nokia as I'm very pleased with my 3120 but a lot of friends are urging me to go for a Sony Ericsson. Ugh. But that's a question for another day) * Replace cell battery, and buy new MP3 player (iPod, whatever) The factors: * I belong to the 'phones should be phones' camp, but now I'm tempted to get a multimedia phone. * I don't like the idea of carrying two gadgets around. * I'm very careful of my belongings (my 3+ year old 3120 looks 3 months old) but am slightly worried about having a more expensive model (have to be careful not to drop it, risk of pocket being picked, etc). * Would very much like to sync my phone contacts, etc with my laptop. Not possible with my 3120 without spending even more money. The last one just might clinch the multimedia phone argument. Having said that, I'm open to ideas. What other factors would you consider? As always, thank you in advance. :)
Cheers, Vikram.

I recently switched from carrying around a mp3 player and phone and got my grimy hands on one of these.[^] I am very happy with the arrangement. I still keep a ipod shuffle around for when I go running though. No, I didn't pay retail for the device either. I got it slightly used for less than half of the price listed on the link.

Bah. From the link, I take it you are talking about the N95? N series phones look very tempting, but at least here, there have been a lot of complaints about them being very slow and even locking up. That's too sad, because I always prefer Nokia to other brands. :(
Cheers, Vikram.

For me, I have Nokia 6030. I know it is currently a very basic model but that's about I can afford currently and I am satisfied with at least the basic communication facilities that it offers. However, it has a good FM Radio and my favorite is Big 92.7 FM which is excellent all 24x7. Here is a brief review of Nokia 6030: http://www.nokia.co.in/A4534153[^]

This is my second N series phone and I am happy to report no lock ups. My first N series phone, a 6682, was a bit sluggish. But this N95 doesn't suffer from the sluggishness in my opinion. I love nokia products myself and will take a lot of convincing to ever consider another manufacturer.

Cheap MP3's are available easily, less than £10 or so. Buying a cheap one means that should you lose/have stolen one, it is easily replaced. I bought an iPod for my wife a couple of years ago,but it seems big and cumbersome now in comparison with some much cheaper models. Too much gadgetry on one item results in it being not very good at any of them and overly complicated. I have an Olympus Digital camer which has far fewer pixels than the one on my phone, but the picture quality is 100x better, because of the lens. Result? I use a camera for taking pictures and a phone for talking to people. (That is not to say I wander around with a gramophone or a string quartet when I wish to listen to music! :)

I did not read your message competely but I can guess what you must be talking about..apparently!. What do I have ? Sony Ericsson k750i. Music quality? Awesome. Battery strength? Awesome. SMS friendly? No. Camera? Awesome. Overall satisfaction? Awesome. I have a 1GB memory card in it and I have plenty of songs stored.. I'm totally puzzled about the way it consumes power!!!.. 8 hours continuous playback. just 40% of battery taken. I even searched all my phone options to see if it has "Enable Solar power" option. But no it's the same old battery. Wait a minute I'm talking about K750i that's a pretty old model indeed. So many new "W" versions of Sony simply rock, for example I love the W810i model.

Decent web browser or capable of running Opera MINI. I only say that because I'm writing a web app for microbrowsers right now and only have emulators, no actual device as of yet, but I've been testing out various online services to get ideas and some of them are pretty slick, like m.gmail.com for example.

Having been in the "a phone is a phone" camp for a long time, having switched to an ericsson MP3 phone, back to Nokia, I have the following to say... Some things to consider are: 1) MP3 players will kill your battery life when used. 2) Phones are getting bigger and bigger and more colourful. This also kills batteries and most MP3 phones are terribly flashy 3) Nokia can make bad phones too. I have one now that I'm happy enough with, but lots of my mates have sworn never to but Nokia again after having one of their last range. Buggy, expensive, tacky, slow, you name it. 4) The Nokia interface design is still the best, IMHO. 5) Sony Ericsson are actually very very good. Slightly annoying interface, but well-built and reliable. Right now I have a pricey nokia, the Navigator. It's a grand phone, if a bit bigger than i'd like. the MP3 player is terrible on it. And it runs down the battery. Before this phone I had a Sony Walkman phone, the w810i. if you have your heart set on getting an MP3 phone, I would recommend it as one of the best I've seen, particularly for sound quality. You get a great little set of headphones with it. Currently though, I'm happy enough to carry around my beloved little Creative Zen, and my slightly chunky Nokia Navigator. I like to listen while I cycle, which is why I got the Zen, with the remote so I can change tracks while I cycle. And I gave the Ericsson to my GF because she broke her phone and I got a good upgrade to the Nokia. but 'd take it back in a heartbeat, it's a great little bit of kit and it's smaller than the Nokia. There you go anyway, in the end it's up to you and your own priorities.

I'm very happy with my 6682 (after upgrading from a 3390 & 3395) even with the random reboots that started happening after I enabled the auto keyboard lock. I just ordered the N810 Internet Tablet ... can't wait to play with that puppy!

I've got a sony ericsson w810i and love it. The mp3 player is really nice to use, and, as a bonus, the phone is actually pretty decent too. The camera is a bit ho-hum, but then I generally use a DSLR, so I'm probably a bit more picky in that regard. The software that comes with it allows you to sync contacts from the windows address book too, up to 1000 I believe, either by bluetooth or the cable. SMS is pretty good, the nice touch that wins me over there is that it remembers the last few people you sent a message to and offers them to you first (of course, you can still pick someone from your contacts list or enter a new number) My main requirement was for a decent phone and mp3 player. Less than 100g (it's about 95g) and not a flip, slide or swing format (I've hung up on my girlfriend a few too may times with my old flip phone...)
